Synopsis:

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the coming-of-age classic — from Academy Award®-winning director John G. Avildsen (1976, Rocky) — that will leave you cheering! There is more to karate than fighting. This is the lesson that Daniel (Ralph Macchio), a San Fernando Valley teenager, is about to learn from a most unexpected teacher: Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita in his Academy Award®-nominated performance, Best Supporting Actor, 1984), an elderly handyman who also happens to be a master of the martial arts. His training and these vital lessons will be called into play when an outmatched Daniel faces Johnny (William Zabka), the skilled leader of the Cobra Kai — a vicious gang of karate school bullies — in a no-holds-barred karate tournament for the championship of the Valley.

The beloved 1980’s classic ‘The Karate Kid’ follows Daniel a teenager new to the San Fernando Valley who after arriving in town quickly ends up getting in over his head with a group of local teenagers that are part of the Cobra Kai Karate club. After losing a fight on the beach and later being beaten and saved by his apartment’s handyman Mr. Miyagi, the kindhearted man begins to train Daniel in his own brand of Karate training once they agree to Daniel facing off against the Cobra Kai students at an upcoming tournament. But even if he can perfect his talents, he’ll still have to find a way to successfully take on the cheating teens and their unlikable teacher who aren’t against playing dirty to win.

The original ‘The Karate Kid’ film was first unleashed upon moviegoers in the summer of 1984 and has become an iconic film that spawned a saga in the decades since its release. The film was directed by John G. Avildsen from a screenplay written by Robert Mark Kamen and stars Ralph Macchio, Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, Elisabeth Shue, Martin Kove and William Zabka, many of which have become synonymous with their roles within, especially with Cobra Kai taking off in recent years.

‘The Karate Kid’ still manages to serve up a thoroughly enjoyable ride that that doesn’t seem to ever get old. Perhaps this is at least in part due to how much this film meant to me as a kid but one can’t argue against just how rewarding and moving the tale truly is. A true underdog tale that’s packed with memorable performances and a story that many kids (at least of that era) could truly relate to, eventually leading to two (or three if you count The Next Karate Kid) sequels, a reboot and even the immensely popular ‘Cobra Kai’ TV series that only seems to be gaining more popularity to this day. Quite simply, ‘The Karate Kid’ is an iconic 1980’s film that still remains relevant and beloved after four decades and will surely be passed along to further generations going forward.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings ‘The Karate Kid’ back home on 4K Ultra HD in a new 40th Anniversary Edition release that features collectible VHS packaging. The new 4K release features the film in full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 which was restored from the original camera negative and looks absolutely phenomenal although as I don’t have access to any of the previous 4K editions of the film I’m unfortunately unable to provide comparisons between them. The stellar UHD video presentation is perfectly complemented by a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that fully immerses fans in the excitement and combined bring the film home looking and sounding outstanding.

This new edition also features a couple of brand new extras including a new Audio Commentary from the creators of ‘Cobra Kai’ and over thirty minutes of new Deleted Scene Dailies, paired with numerous previously released extras and all in the collectible VHS packaging which make this a wonderful new release that’s absolutely worth picking up for any fans of the film that don’t already own it in 4K. VIDEO:

The 40th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Karate Kid’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio restored from the original camera negative. The video presentation looks outstanding as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that stays faithful to its filmic roots and never suffers from any issues to be uncovered throughout. It shows impressive detail noticeable in everything from character faces and clothing to the sun radiating off of the sea at the beach and even in specifics during the night sequences along with plenty more. The Dolby Vision HDR boosts much of it as well from the opening credits to the final showdown of the competition offering richer, lifelike colors that are further complemented by satisfyingly deep and crush free black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition video presentation that should excite fans who haven’t yet had the pleasure of this classic in 4K.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a definite treat itself and it delivers a clean, crisp and noticeably immersive audio presentation throughout. It utilizes all seven available channels in order to send the music along with nature effects such as waves crashing and crowd chatter throughout the various speakers, along with motorbikes roaring behind the viewer and plenty more, all while still making certain that all dialogue and other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up splendidly throughout and should easily please viewers.
