Synopsis:

Gabriel Kaplan stars as Kotter, a graduate of a tough Brooklyn high school who returns to teach a classroom of underachieving “sweathogs” – Epstein, Washington, Horshack, and leader of the pack Vinnie Barbarino. Comedy class is in session!

Class is back in session in the beloved 1970’s sitcom ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ which joins Gabe Kotter, a graduate of a rough Brooklyn High School who years later becomes a teacher and ends up being sent back to his childhood school to teach his old class; a group of troublemaking students called the ‘sweathogs’ who quickly try to push his buttons and test his limits. But with the knowledge of his past and how things work in the community (and this classroom specifically) he ends up forming a bond with these students including four young men named Epstein, Washington, Horshack, and the pack leader Vinnie Barbarino who all realize that they have more in common than expected.

‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ first made its broadcast debut in 1975 and become a strong ratings contender for a handful of seasons before ending its run after 4 seasons and amid some casting and writing shakeups that led to a ratings decline before its eventual cancellation. The series was created by Gabe Kaplan and Alan Sacks and the original cast included Kaplan as Gabe Kotter, along with Marcia Strassman, John Sylvester White, John Travolta, Robert Hegyes, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Ron Palillo. The series offered a refreshingly different type of story and collection of characters that delivered plenty of unique laughs and even a great deal of heart at times as it explored a touching relationship between a group of troubled students and a kindhearted teacher who is able to relate to them and furthermore goes out of his way to be there for these kids when they need him the most, often to the chagrin of his wife when his home life becomes unbalanced with his work life.

The characters of ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ are all unique and each is different than the other which in this era of television was certainly not always typical or expected and in addition to consistent hilarity and fun it also takes time to address some relatable subjects for teens which allowed it to become something more than a typical laugh-by-laugh series and often excelled it in the best way possible. Unfortunately as any fans of the series are likely already well aware, some key cast members including breakout star John Travolta and series lead Gabriel Kaplan departing and a new group of writers who were unable to maintain its fresh and edgy formula didn’t help matters. As a result the series began to lose itself in too many significant ways in its final season which almost certainly was the cause of the ratings decline and cancellation that it eventually suffered.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment brings ‘Welcome Back, Kotter: The Complete Series’ into your home with a new 12-disc DVD collection that features all 95 episodes of the series from its four season run. A Complete Series set of ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ was also previously released by Shout! Factory in 2014 which included a few extras and featured an additional disc per season and while I didn’t review that release nor do I have access to it, I can at least confirm is that this release keeps each season to three discs (totaling 12 for the series) and does not include any of the supplements offered on that set.

The video and audio presentations included on this new DVD set are likely similar to what fans have seen before and the majority look fairly decent when taking their age into consideration but they do still suffer from minor issues and imperfections. For fans that don’t already own the series and would like to have the entire run in one nice DVD collection, then this release is probably worth considering a purchase, especially if you can find it at the right price for your budget.

VIDEO:

The DVD release of ‘Welcome Back, Kotter: The Complete Series’ features a 4×3 presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of the series. The video presentations just like the series itself show their age yet they look largely capable and sufficient when taking the age and source material into account. They look as clean and clear as fans might expect although do suffer from some issues throughout such as heavy pixilation and video noise at times, along with some episodes that see random color blocks appear at times or purple splotches noticeable in the corners of the picture; almost definitely all a result of the video age for the series and how it was shot and fans will likely expect as much. Overall, these are decent enough standard definition video presentations that certainly aren’t perfect but should be adequate for any fans of the series who know what to expect and would love to own this memorable sitcom in one convenient collection.

AUDIO:

The DVD release includes a 192 kbps 2.0 channel Dolby Digital dual mono soundtrack on every episode of all four seasons. These mono soundtracks sound quite good as a whole and aside from a few minor issues on occasion such as a background audio hiss in a few instances and other similar and likely age-related imperfections provide a clean, sharp and perfectly audible audio presentation that balances the music, laugh track and dialogue capably while never allowing any audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with another to become overly problematic or rendered inaudible. Overall, these are mostly solid 2.0 Dolby Digital soundtracks that don’t astound or amaze but do their job well enough and shouldn’t leave fans disappointed.
