Synopsis:

One from the Heart: Reprise is a spectacular 4K restoration and reimagining of the 1982 cult classic from Francis Ford Coppola. Six minutes of footage have been added to replace the original negative, previously thought to be destroyed, resulting in a brand-new Reprise version, approved by Coppola himself. One from the Heart: Reprise tells the story of a Las Vegas couple (Teri Garr, Frederic Forrest) whose break-up on the Fourth of July leads them both to a night on the Strip in pursuit of their romantic fantasies (Raul Julia, Nastassja Kinski). But in this town of gamblers and dreamers, should they bet it all on dreams, or give true love another roll of the dice? Featuring breathtaking design, show-stopping set pieces, the stunning photography of Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) and accompanied by the wonderful Oscar®-nominated music of the one and only Tom Waits, this neon explosion of color, sound, and innovation is a cinematic valentine for all movie lovers.

‘One from the Heart: Reprise’ tells the story of a struggling Las Vegas couple that have a fight prior to the 4th of July which leads to them going their own ways to celebrate the holiday. As both head out separately on the strip, they each end up becoming intrigued by other individuals and as each begins to enjoy a radically different yet magical adventure on their own, they eventually must decide whether they want to go their own ways for good, or if they want to fight to keep the relationship vital. Will their new adventures set them on different paths or only help to bring them back together?

Directed by iconic filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola from a screenplay written by Armyan Bernstein and Francis Ford Coppola and a story by Bernstein, Coppola does a nice job at the helm of ‘One from the Heart’ guiding along the heartfelt and dreamlike tale with heart, beauty and style. The film’s cast includes Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr, Raul Julia, Nastassja Kinski, Lainie Kazan and Harry Dean Stanton.

‘One from the Heart’ was originally released in 1982 and was met with numerous difficulties and wars within the distribution world which eventually led to Coppola screening the film for the public without informing his then distributor after the initial concept and rough cut were met with unexpected backlash. The film is certainly a very different type of experience, especially for the early ‘80s when it was released, filled with unique musical numbers and an almost dreamlike appreciation of musicals, dance numbers and the struggle of love at its core, with the entirety of the film shot solely on Coppola’s Zoetrope soundstage with a plethora of new sets crafted in order to replicate areas of the strip. It’s a beautiful tale in many ways that explores the differences and conflictions between even those in love that can result in unexpected changes and drastic decisions that have the ability to send each in new directions or perhaps bring them closer together depending on the circumstances.

Francis Ford Coppola does a nice job of guiding along the almost dreamlike outing and his work behind the camera is nicely complemented by a stellar cast that includes Frederic Forrest, Teri Garr, Nastassja Kinski and Raul Julia. If you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s work and/or of the key cast but have never had the pleasure of ‘One from the Heart’, then I would definitely encourage trying to give the film a whirl whenever you have the chance. It’s certainly not your average film from this time period but it’s nearly impossible not to fall in love with its style, heart and vibrantly colored look.

Lionsgate brings Francis Ford Coppola’s newly reworked ‘One from the Heart: Reprise’ version home on 4K Ultra HD featuring the new Reprise cut which offers a slightly different edition that shakes things up a bit while still staying largely true to the original presentation in most regards, and additionally includes a newly remastered edition of the 1982 Theatrical Cut on Blu-ray. The 4K disc features the new ‘Reprise’ version of the film presented in full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 which looks quite outstanding especially when considering the source material and general look and age of the film and previously released versions over the years. The impressive new 4K presentation is nicely boosted by a 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack and a collection of brand new extras featuring quite a bit of previously unreleased interviews and behind the scenes footage from the film’s original shoot.

The release also features a beautifully remastered version of the film’s 1982 cut on Blu-ray in full High Definition with 5.1 DTS-HD MA and a loaded helping of additional extras on top of it. VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘One From the Heart: Reprise’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 presented in the film’s original 1.37:1 Aspect Ratio on the reprise version. The video presentation looks quite spectacular as a whole, especially considering the previous releases with worn and affected prints and the lower quality shooting method utilized. Many scenes have had the dupe negatives replaced by the original camera negatives while other issues such as the various black dots appearing onscreen along with bits of hair and other imperfections have all been cleaned up and improved. Detail across the board is impressive in its own right and noticeable on character faces and clothing along with the various streets, bars and more which all shine like never before. The Dolby Vision HDR also complements the film’s neon colors beautifully and contributes some finer, more lifelike colors throughout balanced by capable, deep black levels. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition video presentation that may not be on the level of some releases but considering the source material and previous appearance looks truly remarkable.

The release also features the original 1982 Theatrical Cut on Blu-ray which is presented in full 1080p High Definition with the film’s original 1.37:1 Aspect Ratio. The 1982 cut on Blu-ray looks great in its own right and also features many of the same cleanup techniques throughout that make this probably the best that this cut has ever looked at home on any format over the years.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack and a 2.0 Stereo LPCM soundtrack on both the Reprise cut in 4K and the 1982 cut on Blu-ray. I watched the majority of the film with the 5.1 track utilized and that multichannel soundtrack may not be immersive or aggressive on the level of many modern films but it does its job quite well and delivers a clean, sharp and well balanced audio presentation throughout that never allows any dialogue and other simultaneously occurring audio elements to become distorted or rendered problematic. It takes advantage of all five available channels throughout in order to send music and some other effects and tidbits throughout the various speakers. Overall, this is a fully capable 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up well and while it may not shake the room, it shouldn’t disappoint either.
