THE MOVIE – REVIEW:

‘The Beekeeper’ follows a quiet beekeeper who spends his days tending to the hive and caring for his bees, but when a kindhearted woman who looked after him takes her own life after being scammed out of everything, the beekeeper embarks on a quest for vengeance against those who wronged her. Utilizing his unique abilities and able to take down multiple armed men without a single shot fired, the beekeeper is revealed to be a retired government operative that kept an eye on things and as he becomes transfixed on revenge it soon becomes apparent that he won’t be easy to stop once he sets his sights and talents on a target, regardless of who or how many might try to stop him.

Directed by David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt), Ayer does a great job at the helm of ‘The Beekeeper’ guiding along the thrilling and violent fun with plenty of action and style. The film’s cast includes Jason Statham (Wrath of Man), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Dog), Josh Hutcherson (Five Nights at Freddy’s), Bobby Naderi (Bright), Minnie Driver (Chevalier), Phylicia Rashad (Creed) and Jeremy Irons (The Flash), with each offering solid or at least capable performances for the most part in their respective roles.

‘The Beekeeper’ is a wildly entertaining, action-packed and visually gorgeous action film with plenty of style in its approach and execution. It may play things primarily by the book and the chain of events is often quite predictable, yet it does a fantastic job of crafting a violent, hard-hitting revenge thriller that knows precisely what it wants to be and executes it splendidly, leaving nary a dull moment to be had throughout its duration. With high stakes for our hero from the onset, the danger and number of individuals he has to take on only steadily increases throughout the movie, while taking things to different locations and environments and each action sequence only somehow manages to top the previous one, keeping things constantly tense and thrilling.

‘The Beekeeper’ is one of those action offerings that doesn’t need to do anything extremely clever or unique to keep us invested and wisely chooses to just concentrate on a simple premise and then go out of its way to leave us with a grin plastered on our face time and again while Statham takes down a massive number of individuals in increasingly stylish and fun ways, while the brutality and chaos only seems to increase along with it. Fans of David Ayer, Jason Statham and action films in general should have an awful lot of fun with this wild ride and it makes for a perfect evening’s entertainment when you’re seeking some simple, gorgeous and tense fun that doesn’t require trying to figure out any puzzles or mysteries along the way.

OVERALL:

‘The Beekeeper’ delivers a thrilling, fast-paced and extremely enjoyable ride that after a few brief introductions gets promptly to the explosive fun and only increases the action-packed fun and excitement as it progresses, coming together into one of the more enjoyable action flicks in recent memory and one that never makes the mistake of trying to evolve into something clever or unique, instead just letting the punches fly while keeping the scenery looking visually spectacular and stylish. ‘The Beekeeper’ is highly recommended, especially for those of you that enjoy a well-crafted action film that sets a path and tears through it with no hesitation. Fans of filmmaker David Ayer and star Jason Statham should only find even more to love about this one and if you’re already even the slightest bit interested in the film it should have no trouble whatsoever proving worthy of your time and the cost of a rental to give a shot.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Beekeeper’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and provides a sharp, colorful and wonderfully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any troubles or unexpected issues arising throughout. Detail and clarity is tremendous across the board and character faces and clothing, along with vehicles, exterior settings and interior offices and homesteads all look gorgeous and sharp, with the action sequences holding up cleanly even during the consistently fast-moving moments of which there are quite a few. The HDR-10 addition only improves upon it all by contributing some more accurate and detailed colors that repeatedly pop, while the black levels remain clean, deep and problem free. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition video presentation that keeps everything looking clean, colorful and generally impressive throughout.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is an absolute treat and makes a spectacular complement to the onscreen fun and excitement, delivering a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes full advantage of all seven available channels in order to send swarms of bullets, explosions and debris, along with vehicle and nature effects, bits of crowd chatter and plenty more consistently whipping throughout the various speakers while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a magnificent Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds outstanding every step of the way and repeatedly contributes some extra fun and tension to the viewing experience.
