THE MOVIE – REVIEW:

‘Anyone But You’ tells the story of Bea and Ben who randomly meet at a coffee shop one day and end up hitting it off, only for a magical night to turn into disdain on both ends when actions are misconstrued; leading the two to be at each other’s throats when they next meet months later. Upon discovering that they will both be part of a marriage party, the duo quickly get aggressive as they head to Australia for a gorgeous destination wedding where they are forced to share a room on top of everything else. When both of them discover that their respective exes are present and numerous others are trying to fix the two up, they decide to pretend to be a couple and have some fun with it, but it soon causes other questions to arise, like are they more attracted to each other than they believed.

Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Peter Rabbit) from a screenplay written by Ilana Wolpert (TV’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Will Gluck, and a story by Ilana Wolpert, Gluck does a solid job at the helm of ‘Anyone But You’ capably guiding along the raunchy and occasionally sweet ride. The film’s cast includes Sydney Sweeney (TV’s Euphoria), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Alexandra Shipp (Barbie), GaTa (TV’s Dave), Hadley Robinson (The Boys in the Boat), Michelle Hurd (TV’s Star Trek: Picard), Dermot Mulroney (Scream VI), Darren Barnet (Gran Turismo) and Rachel Griffiths (Hacksaw Ridge) along with more, and most offer decent or at least capable performances in each of their respective roles.

[Blu-Ray Review] Anyone But You; Now Available From Sony 2

‘Anyone But You’ delivers a fairly generic and by the book romantic comedy with very few surprises or unexpected scenarios arising throughout to keep you guessing, but it serves up enough raunchy fun and laughs to keep viewers entertained and laughing fairly frequently throughout its duration, at least as long as you tend to enjoy a hard R comedy that never hesitates whatsoever to fully embrace its raunchy and vulgar sense of humor, while diving entirely into the over the top goofiness and offensive fun that it seems to aim for. Some reviewers have clearly enjoyed it more than others and I have to admit I found myself laughing rather consistently throughout the film being that I can’t help but appreciate some simplistic and unapologetically vulgar comedy that strives for fun and little else; something that’s honestly quite refreshing at times to mix it up after watching some darker or more complex films and shows.

‘Anyone But You’ may not be anything that will stand out as extremely original (or original at all really) and probably won’t deliver many moments that will stick with you long after viewing, but it never has any trouble keeping the fun and offense laughs flowing at a steady pace throughout, with just enough heart to keep it from being too aggravating. If you’re looking forward to this one or are a big fan of stars Sydney Sweeney and/or Glen Powell then it should be worth taking the time to check out whenever possible, especially if you can go in without expecting it to offer anything unique or groundbreaking.

OVERALL:

‘Anyone But You’ is a funny, lighthearted and thoroughly entertaining good time that may be a lot of fun, but never manages to bring any surprises or unexpected moments to the table along the way. It never gets dull or uninteresting and even while simply retreading territory that’s been used and overused over the years, the laughs, heart and a solid cast led by Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell all help to make this one worthwhile, at least if you’re seeking a simplistic and funny movie that you can relax with one evening without having to think too hard or follow any complex plotlines. ‘Anyone But You’ is recommended for anyone that’s a fan of the two leads or typically enjoys a raunchy romantic comedy that fully embraces its R rating. If you’re already intrigued by this one it should at least be worth renting whenever you have the opportunity.
