Yet who can truly rely on the testimony of a witness who cannot see? Who can trust Berlin when he ultimately becomes a suspect in the murders? And who can keep the vulnerable Helena from becoming the next Jennifer?

THE MOVIE/ REVIEW:

‘Jennifer 8’ accompanies homicide investigator John Berlin who shortly after arriving at his new job location and reuniting with his longtime mentor becomes enthralled with a cold case that he believes is still active due to some grisly new discoveries. In his quest for the truth and to curtail the killer possibly trying to kill a new victim, John becomes close to a young blind woman who he is instantly attracted to. As things start to become uncertain and others in the department advise him to let the case go insisting that the two cases are unrelated, John refuses to relent and fully immerses himself into the matter regardless of what it might cost him.

[Blu-Ray Review] ‘Jennifer 8’ Special Edition; Now Available From Scream Factory 1

The film was written and directed by Bruce Robinson (The Rum Diary) who does a great job at the helm of ‘Jennifer 8’ guiding along the cat and mouse crime-thriller with a fitting sense of gloom throughout. The film’s notable cast includes Andy Garcia (Wrath of Man), Uma Thurman (The War with Grandpa), Lance Henriksen (TV’s Rabbit Hole), and John Malkovich (Fool’s Paradise) along with more and the majority each offer fitting and capable performances in their respective roles which help this engaging mystery to work as smoothly as it does.

‘Jennifer 8’ was initially released in late 1992 and while the film underperformed at the box office, it gained at least a modicum of cult status in the home video market over subsequent years. It delivers an intriguing thriller with some interesting characters, at least a few notable stars that each offer quite solid performances and a mystery at its core that never has any trouble keeping you glued to the screen throughout; all with an almost gloomy and bleak atmosphere that works remarkably well to fit with the subject and story itself. The film still manages to offer an engaging and tense ride today, more than three decades after it was first released, and thanks to this new Special Edition Blu-ray release from Shout! Studios and Scream Factory, fans can also now finally experience the Deleted Ending to the tale which helps us to understand why that ending felt so rushed and offbeat initially. If you’ve never had the pleasure of ‘Jennifer 8’ before but tend to appreciate a solid crime thriller with an engaging mystery and a great cast to back it up, I would strongly encourage giving it a chance whenever you have the opportunity.

OVERALL:

Scream Factory brings ‘Jennifer 8’ home on Blu-ray in a new Special Edition that features a new high definition presentation from a new 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative that looks quite tremendous altogether and should excite fans of this underrated crime thriller. The film’s notable new video presentation is only complemented by a solid multichannel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack and some rewarding new bonus content including a brand new retrospective look back at the film featuring the writer/director and stars reflecting on the film after all these years, along with a never-before-seen ‘Deleted Alternate Ending’ which offers some additional closure to the tale and also helps to explain why the ending might have initially felt so rushed. The new ending is available separately as well as being included in a new cut also featured within (although that version only features a 2.0 DTS-HD MA soundtrack). Dedicated fans of this enjoyable thriller should be quite pleased by what this new Special Edition Blu-ray release of ‘Jennifer 8’ has to offer and the release is definitely recommended for anyone that’s already considering a purchase.

VIDEO:

The Scream Factory Special Edition Blu-ray release of ‘Jennifer 8’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation from a new 4K scan of the Original Camera Negative with the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any troubles or issues occurring along the way (although unsurprisingly, the quality of the Alternate Ending does look significantly rougher than the rest of the film, but is certainly in no way horrendous or unwatchable by any means). It shows impressive detail throughout on nearly everything appearing onscreen from character faces and clothing, vehicles, the rainy exteriors and gloomy as well as bright interiors, along with everything else in between. Overall, this is a very nice new high definition video presentation that never disappoints along its course and should leave fans of the film quite pleased.

AUDIO:

The Special Edition Blu-ray release features 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio and 2.0 DTS-HD MA soundtracks for the Theatrical Cut of the film. The cut of the film with the Deleted Alternate Ending included is only available in 2.0 DTS-HD MA, but the only difference between the two cuts seems to be the extended ending therefore you can always watch the theatrical cut and then watch the extended ending as it’s also included separately as an extra. The multichannel soundtrack included on the Theatrical Cut sounds very good as a whole and offers a crisp, clean and well-balanced audio presentation throughout. It occasionally takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, some weather, vehicle and action related effects, plus a bit more throughout the various speakers when fitting, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that may occur simultaneously with one another remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up well throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Scream Factory Special Edition Blu-ray release of ‘Jennifer 8’ includes a few noteworthy extras that fans of the film should appreciate. Included on the release are 2 cuts of the film; the Theatrical Version and a second version that includes the deleted, alternate ending. The ‘Deleted Alternate Ending’ is also included separately (running approximately 6 minutes in length), while the release also includes a retrospective look at the film in ‘Is It Dark Yet? Looking Back at Jennifer 8’ (running approximately 42 minutes in length) which features interviews/comments with the cast and crew reflecting on the film. The film’s ‘Original Theatrical Trailer’ (approximately 2 minutes) is also included.
