The third season of Doom Patrol opens with Niles Caulder’s “super” daughter Dorothy’s confrontation with the Candlemaker that leads to a devastating loss. The Doom Patrol is at a difficult crossroads and each member struggles to face who they are and who they want to be. And things get a whole lot more complicated when Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez) arrives in a time machine with a very specific mission, if only she could remember it.
Please Note: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The opinions I share are my own.
Newcomers to ‘Doom Patrol’ are encouraged to consider starting at the beginning due to the show’s serialized nature and various continuing story elements. You can find our reviews of the previous Blu-ray Season releases below!
The third season of ‘Doom Patrol’ picks up following the devastating events that concluded season two. After Dorothy is forced to confront the Candlemaker while suffering a horrific loss, the group must struggle to each find their place and determine their individual paths forward now that everything has changed. But when a mysterious time-traveling woman arrives without any knowledge of her name or purpose for traveling there, the Doom Patrol must band together to try and uncover the truth of what’s occurring, while also dealing with their own independent problems, many of which could lead to further trouble for the team as a whole just when they need all hands on deck more than ever.
Season 3 of ‘Doom Patrol’ serves up another delightfully strange, vulgar and offbeat collection of episodes with our favorite group of struggling heroes. Delving into the personal struggles of each member in a new way as each is confronted with loss and their own manner of dealing with it, while also introducing some new threats and curious situations for our team to tackle and survive (or at least come back from) and the result is quite possibly an even more odd and curious season than the first two, but also one that’s filled with heart, oddities and of course a great deal of goofy fun to be had throughout. Not to mention its share of twists and turns along the way.
Any fans of ‘Doom Patrol’ that haven’t yet a chance to give the third season a watch will probably want to try and make a point of doing so at your earliest convenience, especially with season four now underway on HBO Max. The third season is another wonderfully odd and massively entertaining ride that fans should find plenty to love about and almost certainly won’t want to miss out on.
Overall, Season 3 of ‘Doom Patrol’ delivers another wonderfully odd and exciting batch of episodes with the world’s most strange and conflicted collection of superheroes that fans should have a great deal of fun with; accompanying these offbeat heroes as they tackle everything from time travel, personal struggle, puppets and even life after death and zombies. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s 3-disc Blu-ray release of ‘Doom Patrol: The Complete Third Season’ in particular brings home all ten episodes from the DC show’s third season featuring great high definition video and audio presentations on each, split between three discs for optimum quality and resulting in nice bitrates across the board. Add to that some entertaining extras and fans that have already been collecting each season of this curious, yet lovable series should be thoroughly satisfied with the latest season release on Blu-ray. If you’re a fan and already considering a purchase then this one is recommended.
The Blu-ray release of ‘Doom Patrol: The Complete Third Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the show’s original 2.20:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the third season’s episodes. The video presentations look wonderful as a whole and provide sharp, clean and well-detailed presentations from start to finish on each episode. They hold up smoothly throughout even during the many darkly lit and fast moving sequences which are quite common for the series and never suffer from any unexpected troubles arising along the way, all character and background details looking consistently sharp and crisp. Overall, these are solid high definition video presentations that hold up remarkably well and are further complemented by the ample bitrates allotted to each.
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 10 Season Three episodes. These multichannel soundtracks deliver crisp, clean and wonderfully immersive audio presentations on every episode of the third season. They repeatedly take advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, action and nature effects, plus odd creatures and a great deal more regularly zipping throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean, clear and fully audible. Overall, these are great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that never disappoint and repeatedly contribute plenty of extra fun to the viewing experience.
The Blu-ray release of ‘Doom Patrol: The Complete Third Season’ features a few enjoyable extras including a couple of Behind the Scenes Featurettes that explore different aspects of bringing the season to life and featuring interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more.
