Synopsis:

In “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto the Super-Dog (Dwayne Johnson) and Superman (John Krasinski) are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound (Kevin Hart), PB the potbellied pig (Vanessa Bayer), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne) and Chip the squirrel (Diego Luna)—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.

Please Note: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The opinions I share are my own.

‘DC League of Super-Pets’ joins Superman’s beloved canine companion Krypto the Super-Dog who becomes the last hope of Superman and the Justice League after they are captured. Having also lost his powers in an attempt to save his best friend, Krypto will have to enlist the help of a group of shelter pets that have suddenly gained powers to try and help him locate and rescue the human heroes before it’s too late. But will Krypto and this group of various animals still trying to figure out and control their newfound powers be enough to save the day?

Directed by Jared Stern (Happy Anniversary) from a screenplay written by Stern and John Whittington (The Lego Batman Movie), Stern does a nice job at the helm of ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ smoothly guiding along the humorous and enjoyable tale. The film’s voice cast features quite a few notable individuals and includes Dwayne Johnson (Moana), Kevin Hart (The Secret Life of Pets), Kate McKinnon (Ferdinand), John Krasinski (TV’s BoJack Horseman), Vanessa Bayer (TV’s The Awesomes), Natasha Lyonne (TV’s Big Mouth), Diego Luna (TV’s Maya and the Three), Marc Maron (TV’s Metalocalypse), Thomas Middleditch (TV’s Solar Opposites), Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog) and Keanu Reeves (Toy Story 4) along with more, the majority each doing their part to help make this one work as well as it does.

‘DC League of Super-Pets’ is a rewarding surprise of an animated family film from the DC comics universe that’s as exciting and touching as it is hilarious and just downright enjoyable from start to finish. Without any real dull moments throughout and some solid, colorful animation, it should easily keep the little ones as consistently engaged as the older viewers while it finds a clever and adequately goofy way to offer a new DC related superhero tale with some less familiar faces front and center. It keeps things largely family friendly and while there are certainly some action sequences and a few mildly emotional moments occurring along the way, it never gets gritty or dark but instead finds a capable balance that works quite well for most ages without sacrificing story or excitement in the process. Whether you’re a diehard DC comics fan, a parent with young superhero fans at home or just a fan of those comprising the notable voice cast, you should find plenty to appreciate about this surprisingly touching and enjoyable film and I would strongly encourage making a point of taking the time to give it a shot.

Overall, ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ is a fun, funny and fast paced family adventure loaded with heart, excitement and plenty of laughs. With an amusing collection of characters that are easy to fall in love with, paired with some truly exciting action sequences and a great (and star-studded) voice cast led by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to back it all up, this animated DC movie is a rewarding treat that has a lot going for it and is well worth giving a chance. ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ is definitely recommended for anyone already even somewhat interested in the film, even if you might be on the fence about it for some reason or another. Those of you who already thoroughly enjoyed it and want to own the film should also be quite pleased with this solid 4K Ultra HD release.

The video presentation looks solid as a whole and offers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that holds up capably without any troubles arising along the way. Everything from the animated characters to the backgrounds look great and vibrant and even the fast moving moments never result in any unexpected issues. The HDR-10 addition contributes nicely as well and provides a great and often fairly bright color palette throughout that also features some satisfyingly rich blacks that look spectacular. Overall, this is a very nice Ultra High Definition video presentation that shouldn’t have any trouble pleasing fans and first time viewers alike.

It regularly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send characters, action effects, nature content and more throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively affected in the process.
