Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back where he doesn’t belong, this time going “deep, deep, deep undercover” to stop a gang of international munitions smugglers. Also returning are Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as Murphy’s crime-busting sidekicks, ready to unleash blazing gunfire alongside rapid-fire gags.
Please Note: Paramount Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The opinions I share are my own.
Axel Foley is back in ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ which rejoins the Detroit Detective who must return to the unfamiliar territory of Beverly Hills, California after someone close to him is gunned down on the street. Joining forces with our favorite Beverly Hills detectives Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, the three must uncover the culprit behind a chain of robberies that are connected to the shooting of their friend, all while trying to avoid losing their jobs in the newly changed Beverly Hills police department.
Directed by Tony Scott this time around and featuring a cast comprised of numerous returning individuals and some newcomers including Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Jürgen Prochnow, Brigitte Nielsen and more, ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ still delivers a fun, swiftly paced and hilarious sequel that never seems to disappoint or lose its charm over time.
‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ is a pretty great sequel and one that I’ve always been a fan of personally. In some ways it excels above its predecessor. While it may not be a better film, this sequel really nailed the tone and style, taking some of the best areas of the original such as the humor, thrilling action and perhaps most notably the enjoyable interactions between Murphy, Reinhold and Ashton, then upping the ante on almost all of them to deliver a fast paced, fairly action packed and frequently hilarious follow-up that never seems to get old. Reinhold repeatedly steals the show with the reveals of his aggressive arsenal and gritty cop side which leads to many of the film’s richest laughs and everything else fits nicely together to make for a great sequel that still holds up well thirty-five years after its initial release.
Now, ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ arrives home in glorious 4K Ultra HD for the first time in celebration of its thirty-fifth anniversary and serves up a gorgeous new 4K presentation complemented by the addition of Dolby Vision HDR and a multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that should thrill fans of the series. It may be absent of any extras, but for anyone that loves this film as much as I do, the upgrade will probably be worth it for the outstanding video presentation alone.
Overall, the new 4K Ultra HD release of ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ brings the hilarious sequel home in Ultra High Definition for the first time to celebrate its thirty-fifth anniversary. This new release brings the beloved sequel directed by Tony Scott and starring Eddie Murphy home sporting a magnificent new 4K Ultra HD video presentation that looks nearly perfect, complemented by Dolby Vision and HDR-10 and paired with a nice DTS-HD MA multichannel soundtrack in order to offer the best quality this delightful follow-up has ever seen at home. Even without any included extras on the disc, dedicated fans of the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ franchise and star Eddie Murphy who are 4K capable will probably want to consider picking this one up for the impressive quality upgrade alone. If you’re already contemplating a purchase, this release is definitely recommended!
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in a 2.39:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks magnificent across the board and offers a sharp, colorful and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any noticeable troubles along the way. It’s rich with heavy grain which helps to recreate a faithful filmic presentation that holds up effortlessly throughout even during the various darkly lit and fast moving sequences, capturing miniscule facial details and other elements beautifully. The Dolby Vision addition only helps to really seal the deal and make this one look as spectacular as it does, delivering deep, rich blacks evenly balanced with blazing bright colors and the result is nothing short of fantastic. Overall, this is a marvelous 4K ultra HD presentation that should absolutely thrill fans of this solid sequel.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack does its job well and provides a clean, crisp and fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It frequently takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send the catchy music, along with gunshots, vehicle effects and other action elements plus more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate and never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered inaudible in the process. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that may not be an upgrade itself, but still sounds rather great throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ does not include any bonus content.
