Everyone’s favorite spooky family is back! Morticia and Gomez are distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond, they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. What could possibly go wrong?
Please Note: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The opinions I share are my own.
Our favorite creepy and kooky family returns in the animated sequel ‘The Addams Family 2’ which sees the Addams clan heading out for a family vacation in the hope that it might bring them all closer together. But as the family embarks on a cross-country trip of misadventures in their haunted camper they are pursued by a pair of individuals who claim that Wednesday may not in fact be their child due to a mix-up at the hospital when she was born. Unwilling to accept this questionable claim, they determine the best way to keep them safe and rekindle a slipping relationship is to visit all their favorite haunts like the Alamo and the Grand Canyon. Naturally, mayhem and hilarious mishaps arise at each stop as the family attempts to stay one step ahead of their pursuers while also cramming as much family fun into the trip as possible.
‘The Addams Family 2’ delivers another fun, funny and macabre adventure with our favorite offbeat family and finds plenty of unique and enjoyable ways to keep things amusing and moving at a brisk pace. The follow-up doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor (you can also read my review of the first film’s Blu-ray release HERE) and while some of it occasionally becomes too ridiculous and farfetched even for this family, it never fails to keep the heartwarming fun and laughs flowing along the way; always complemented by some gorgeous animation that’s a treat to behold in itself. Once again directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon whose capable guidance and clear passion for the characters is only further complimented by a notable voice cast of new and returning individuals that includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton, Wallace Shawn, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler and Bill Hader, along with more. I would strongly encourage anyone who enjoyed the first animated film or is a fan of ‘The Addams Family’ in general to try and find the opportunity to give ‘The Addams Family 2’ a chance. It may not be perfect or quite as clever and charming as the last film, but it offers more than enough kooky fun and excitement to still make it well worth a watch. Those who thoroughly enjoyed the first film shouldn’t be terribly surprised if they end up wanting to own this one on Blu-ray at some point too, at least whenever the price is right.
Overall, ‘The Addams Family 2’ is a beautifully animated follow-up that takes our favorite kooky family on a mayhem filled road trip with hilariously disastrous results. It may not be quite as spectacular as the first film, but it has more than enough kindhearted fun, adventure and humor to still make it a consistently enjoyable treat that fans won’t want to overlook and should still prove a winner for repeat viewings, especially if you have little ones around that enjoy these new animated feature films. ‘The Addams Family 2’ is recommended, especially for any fans of this delightfully kooky family in general and even more so for those who were fans of the first animated feature released in 2019. If you’re currently on the fence about this one, I would still suggest at least considering a rental option if you’re understandably hesitant to spend the money on a blind purchase.
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Addams Family 2’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole and does a capable job of capturing the nice looking animation in order to offer a clean, sharp and vibrantly colored presentation from start to finish with no notable issues arising along the way. It holds up wonderfully even during the various darkly lit and fast moving moments, never allowing anything that’s occurring onscreen to become negatively affected or problematic. Overall, this is a solid high definition video presentation that should satisfy the fans and first time viewers alike.
The Blu-ray release features a 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack does its job capably and delivers a crisp, clean and at times fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the music, along with vehicles whipping by, water pouring and more seeping throughout the various speakers quite regularly, albeit not quite as expansive with the surround elements at times as many might expect or hope for. Nonetheless everything remains properly balanced and placed from start to finish and all dialogue and other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with other audio effects always remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a quite nice 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up well throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Addams Family 2’ features a few fun extras including a couple of Behind the Scenes Featurettes including interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more. The included Featurettes are ‘We’re Altogether Addams’ (running approximately 9 minutes in length) and ‘Courage to be Kooky’ (running approximately 3 minutes). Also included is ‘The Addams Family Road Trip Checklist’ (approximately 4 minutes).
