‘Superman & Lois’ joins Superman/Clark Kent and his wife Lois Lane who after years of fighting villains and monsters tackle what just may be their biggest challenge yet, being parents to two teenage boys. Worried about the effect their working lives are having on their family and struggling with the concern that their teenage sons may have inherited some of their father’s Kryptonian abilities, they move back to Clark’s hometown of Smallville in the hope of slowing things down. Unfortunately, a new mess of troubles and the activities of the dangerous Morgan Edge soon prove that they aren’t going to be able to step away from their past lives so easily.
The latest new series in the ever expanding Arrow-verse line up of DC Comics series on The CW, ‘Superman and Lois’ takes a more cinematic approach than many of its associated shows, showcasing some gorgeous sets, scenery and action sequences that often feel a step above what we’ve become familiar with. Perhaps even more impressive is just how much heart and soul the series brings to the table. While there’s no shortage of stellar action scenes and explosive Superman moments, it also takes plenty of time to delve into the familiar matters which is really the soul of this series when it all comes down to it. Tackling the struggles of balancing their dangerous and hectic lives with that of raising two teenage sons who just might have their own unique talents, while also exploring their struggle to step back from the lives they’ve known and how difficult that can be even with more important things occurring in their personal worlds. The great cast led by Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in the title roles also helps to make this one work as smoothly as it does and it’s great to see both returning to the fold after their appearances in crossover events and some of the other related shows. The series also serves up some fun twists on the material most are familiar with and does a great job of crafting an extremely fun and rewarding series that clearly has a lot of potential and certainly makes for another welcome addition to the Arrow-verse family of shows.
Overall, the debut season of ‘Superman and Lois’ is a fun, heartfelt and exciting batch of episodes with plenty of explosive action, but never at the cost of the show’s heart. It’s definitely a positive start to the series that shows some true promise, with Hoechlin and Tulloch offering solid portrayals of Superman and Lois Lane. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s 3-disc Blu-ray release of ‘Superman and Lois: The Complete First Season’ brings home extended versions of all fifteen episodes from the show’s debut season sporting nice high definition video and audio presentations on each, along with some entertaining bonus content. Any dedicated fans of the CW’s interconnected DC shows along with fans of this series in particular who might be considering a purchase of the release are encouraged to do so. It’s a pretty solid Blu-ray release for what looks to be a promising new addition to the Arrow-verse and the series itself is also definitely worth taking the time to check out if you haven’t yet had the pleasure.
The Blu-ray release of ‘Superman and Lois: The Complete First Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the show’s original 2.20:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the debut season’s episodes. The video presentations look pretty great as a whole and do a nice job of capturing the show’s cinematic look and style with a clean, smooth and richly detailed presentation on every episode. They hold up impressively even during the various darkly lit and fast moving action sequences throughout and never allow anything that’s occurring onscreen to become negatively affected or problematic. Overall, these are very nice high definition video presentations that look clean and sharp throughout and shouldn’t disappoint the show’s fans.
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 15 Season One episodes. These multichannel soundtracks sound magnificent and serve up clean, crisp and quite active audio presentations on every episode. They constantly take full advantage of all five available channels in order to send Superman and other characters, along with action effects, nature and crowd elements, plus plenty more consistently whipping throughout the various speakers quite regularly, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously never become distorted or rendered inaudible in the process. Overall, these are fantastic 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that sound clean and sharp every step of the way and should more than please fans and first time viewers.
