[DVD Review] Scooby-Doo! And Guess Who?: The Complete First Season; Now Available On DVD & Digital From Warner Bros 3

‘Scooby-Doo! and Guess Who?’ is a delightful new Scooby-Doo animated series that brings a nice balance of more recent Scooby cartoons and those of the earlier days. Borrowing the general concept introduced in the 1972 hour-long ‘The New Scooby-Doo Movies’ animated series (although with 22 minute episodes this time) and revitalizing it for the modern era which should allow for a whole new generation to better enjoy and relate to many of the stars, while still retaining enough of the basics from the original Scooby toons to keep us adult fans satisfied.

The series certainly features quite the impressive array of guest stars from various ends of the entertainment world, including fictional icons Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and even Sherlock Holmes and Steve Urkel, along with popular actors, comedians, musicians and entertainers such as Mark Hamill (and in more ways than one), Wanda Sykes, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Buscemi, George Takei, Halsey, Jeff Dunham and Christian Slater, not to mention NBA superstar Chris Paul and more! Add into the mix some fresh and fun new mysteries and settings, plus plenty of laughs and occasionally even a few fun twists and surprises that are almost guaranteed to elicit a smile or chuckle and ‘Scooby-Doo! and Guess Who?’ quickly becomes a welcome new addition to the list of Scooby-Doo cartoon series and one that many fans including myself will probably enjoy revisiting for years to come. Dedicated Scooby-Doo fans of all ages will definitely want to make a point of giving ‘Scooby-Doo! and Guess Who?’ a chance at some point if you haven’t yet had the pleasure.

VIDEO:

The DVD release of ‘Scooby-Doo! and Guess Who?: The Complete First Season’ features a 16×9 friendly video presentation on all 26 episodes from the debut season, each with the 1.78:1 aspect ratio in which they were originally broadcast/released. The video presentations look wonderful altogether and deliver impressively within the confines of the DVD format. They provide generally smooth, clean and vibrantly colored presentations on every episode throughout the four disc set that each hold up quite capably even during the various fast moving and heavily populated moments throughout without anything occurring onscreen ever becoming negatively affected. Overall, these are very nice standard definition video presentations that should thoroughly please the fans who are content with the DVD format in general.

AUDIO:

The DVD release includes a 384 Kbps 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack on all 26 Season One episodes. These multichannel soundtracks offer smooth, clean and fairly active audio presentations on each episode. They frequently take advantage of all five available channels in order to send the music, effects and other content throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, even allowing some of the bits within to become even more enjoyable such as Shaggy and Scooby being thrown in circles by an out of control hose in the episode “What a Night, For a Dark Knight!” which sends their screams and the water whipping in circles across the speakers. All the while it makes certain that any dialogue and/or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously never become distorted or rendered inaudible. Overall, these are great 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtracks that repeatedly contribute some additional fun to the viewing experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD release of ‘Scooby-Doo! And Guess Who?: The Complete First Season’ does not include any bonus content.
