Synopsis:

The Winchester brothers’ harrowing journey into the heart of darkness continues as Supernatural enters Season Fourteen. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have matched wits with monsters, demons, Heaven and Hell. But last season, the Winchesters and Castiel (Misha Collins) stumbled upon a terrifying alternative universe: an apocalyptic world where they were never born, all while training Jack (Alexander Calvert), the son of Lucifer, and trying to save their mother, Mary Winchester. The final battle with Lucifer and the Archangel Michael altered the Winchesters’ lives forever…and created an even greater threat for Sam and Dean. The boys are back and willing to risk everything for their loved ones in all twenty thrilling new adventures, including a historic 300th episode, with a Winchester family reunion never to be forgotten.

The fourteenth season of ‘Supernatural’ picks up following the equally heartwarming and tragic events that concluded season thirteen. With their mother and the others from the other side finally back safe and forming a new network of hunters on our side and Lucifer finally defeated thanks to Dean’s deal with Michael, Sam and the rest of the team now find themselves trying to track down Dean following Michael’s betrayal, intent to find a way to stop the archangel and reclaim his brother. But when Dean mysteriously returns with Michael no longer in tow, things start to get back to normal, at least until glimpses of the archangel’s actions and hints at his intentions begin to arise causing the brothers to ramp up the hunt and pursue the near-god at all costs before he’s able to enact his terrifying plan.

The fourteenth season of ‘Supernatural’ (and now also confirmed to be the show’s penultimate run with the recent news that the long-running series will conclude with season fifteen) rejoins our favorite brothers and their loyal friends as they combat some deadly new evils as well as a terrifyingly powerful enemy that has a grip on one of their own. Add to that a heartwarming three hundredth episode with an emotional reunion more than a decade in the making and it all comes together into a quite solid penultimate season overall with more than enough of everything fellow fans of the long running series love. I would definitely encourage fans that haven’t yet had a chance to watch the latest season to try and make a point of doing so whenever possible, especially before the final season kicks off this October on the CW.

As far as the release’s technical merits are concerned, the latest Blu-ray set brings home all twenty episodes of season fourteen with fairly impressive high definition video and audio presentations on each and accompanied by a nice helping of bonus content including some ‘Audio Commentaries’, ‘Deleted Scenes’ and more (please see the special features section in the technical specification coverage of the review below for more detailed information) in this altogether highly capable ‘Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season’ Blu-ray release that should satisfy most fans overall, although some may be mildly disappointed to discover it switches to a 3-disc collection as opposed to 4 this year, cutting down on one disc likely as a result of the slightly shorter than normal episode count. While it does detract a tad from the bitrate, everything still holds up remarkably well with the prior season releases and will still likely be a must own for the fans collecting the season sets over the years.

[Blu-Ray Review] Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season: Now Available On Blu-ray & DVD From Warner Bros 4

Overall, season fourteen of ‘Supernatural’ serves up all of the witty humor, bloody violence and creepy fun that fans love, while beginning to set forth plans for an endgame with the recent announcement that next season will be the show’s last. Filled with plenty of dangerous enemies on all sides, the threat of losing one of their own and of course a touching three hundredth episode fans should truly appreciate, the fourteenth season is definitely well worth checking out for those a tad behind. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s 3-disc Blu-ray collection for ‘Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season’ may cut back on a disc with the slightly smaller season order but still serves up quite impressive high definition video and audio presentations on every episode, along with some fun extras and while some fans may be mildly disappointed by the smaller set, you can at least rest assured that everything within holds up better than you might expect.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of season fourteen’s episodes. The video presentations look pretty great as a whole, and even with the release bumping up the content and adding an additional episode (compared to the usual 6 episodes per disc) on two of the discs this year, the quality still manages to hold up surprisingly well, providing a rich, smooth and detailed presentation on every episode with no real issues or faults to be uncovered throughout. They hold up admirably even during the various darkly lit and fast moving sequences that are fairly frequent in the series, never allowing anything onscreen to become negatively affected or rendered indiscernible. Overall, these are fantastic high definition video presentations that should more than please series fans that have been fully content with the previous season releases.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 20 Season Fourteen episodes. These multichannel soundtracks offer crisp, clean and consistently aggressive audio presentations on each episode, once more proving to be one of the highlights of the release. They continually take full advantage of all five available channels in order to send bullets, vehicles, creepy effects, plus music and plenty more regularly whipping throughout the various speakers, and never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously becoming distorted or rendered inaudible in the process. Overall, these are magnificent 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that sound wonderful across the board and once again contribute plenty of additional fun to the overall viewing experience.
