This breakneck thriller teams over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars for the martial arts film event of the year. When a hit contract is taken out on a billionaire’s daughter (Celina Jade) intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate, a team of wanted mercenaries (Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen) must take on a group of professional assassins (Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping) to stop them from hitting their target. Also featuring Iko Uwais and Jeeja Yanin.
‘Triple Threat’ tells the story of three dangerous strangers who find their fates intertwined following a deadly assault from a team of hitmen resulting in unexpected losses and betrayal for all three. After managing to at least escape with their lives, they discover a plot by the assassins that attempted to kill them to eliminate a billionaire’s daughter intent on improving things for the better in the community. Now, these three deadly strangers must try and work together in order to protect the woman while also taking advantage of the situation in order to exact their own revenge against the team that betrayed them in this all out action-packed extravaganza starring some of the most talented action stars from around the globe.
Directed by Jesse V. Johnson (The Debt Collector, Avengement) from a screenplay by Joey O’Bryan and co-written by Fangjin Song, with additional material by Paul Staheli, Johnson does a highly capable job at the helm of ‘Triple Threat’ guiding this action-loaded good time swiftly along with fitting style and tension. The film also owes the majority of credit to the impressive collection of martial arts and action film superstars that comprise the cast including Tony Jaa (the ‘Ong Bak’ franchise), Iko Uwais (‘The Raid’ franchise), Tiger Chen (Man of Tai Chi), Scott Adkins (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning), Celina Jade (The Man with the Iron Fists), Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage), Michael Jai White (Dragged Across Concrete), JeeJa Yanin (Never Back Down: No Surrender), Dominiquie Vandenberg (Inland Empire) and more, who all paired together and sharing the screen basically guarantees an intense and breathtaking ride in itself.
‘Triple Threat’ is a slick, lightning paced and hard hitting action extravaganza featuring many of the most talented martial artists from around the globe. Loaded with tense and explosive action sequences throughout and plenty of brutal and breathtaking hand to hand combat that should have no trouble keeping viewers consistently glued to the screen throughout, it’s one of the best action movies of the year and an event in itself to be celebrated thanks to all of the talented stars featured within. It may not offer the most unique story or carefully constructed plot, but in all fairness that’s the last thing fans will be seeking in the film, and the elements they are hoping for including outstanding and memorable action sequences and fights between these talented action stars are delivered tenfold. I would strongly encourage any fans of any or the entire talented cast of action stars, along with anyone who tends to enjoy a hard hitting and well-choreographed action flick that never pulls its punches or gets dull to make a definite point of checking out ‘Triple Threat’ whenever you can find the opportunity. Chances are that you’ll have a great deal of fun with this one if nothing else and be thrilled that you decided to give it a whirl, and don’t be terribly surprised if you also find yourself wanting to purchase a copy in the foreseeable future.
Overall, ‘Triple Threat’ is a wildly entertaining and action-packed event with a plethora of talented action stars from around the globe front and center. It may not offer anything extraordinary in the way of story, but more than manages to serve up the explosive action and hand to hand face-offs that fans will be seeking. ‘Triple Threat’ is definitely highly recommended for fellow action movie fans, as well as fans of any or all of the talented action stars from around the world that are featured here, although anyone generally indifferent to the genre probably won’t be overly excited for this action star fest. For anyone already looking forward to the movie though, it should at least prove well worth ninety minutes of your time and the cost of a rental one evening.
The Blu-ray release of ‘Triple Threat’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 2.40:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty good for the most part and provides a clean, smooth and fairly detailed presentation from start to finish. It holds up quite well even during the numerous fast moving and occasionally darkly lit action sequences and hand to hand fights, although edges do occasionally appear a bit rough, yet fortunately never in an overly distractive manner unless paused. Overall, this is a pretty solid high definition video presentation altogether that shouldn’t have much trouble satisfying most fans.
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a sharp, clean and often quite aggressive audio presentation throughout. Frequently taking advantage of all five available channels in order to send bullets, debris, nature elements and plenty more regularly whipping throughout the various speakers and never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered inaudible in the process. Overall, this is a capable 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that makes a welcome compliment to the onscreen action.
The Blu-ray release of ‘Triple Threat’ includes one extra of note, an ‘Interview With The Cast’ (running approximately 10 minutes in length), as well as the ‘Teaser Trailer’ (running approximately 1 minute) and ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (approximately 1 minute) for the movie.
