Directed by Ava DuVernay and featuring a noteworthy cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Peña, Chris Pine and Storm Reid, along with more, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ is a moving, magical and thrilling adventure into the unknown for the whole family.

I should note that I’ve never personally had the pleasure of reading the famous book that serves as its basis (or at least its inspiration) and am therefore unable to compare the tone and other elements such as the vast differences many report existing between the two (and the few directly mentioned in the some of the interviews included in the extras) so my opinion of the film is based solely on the film itself. That being said, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ really isn’t a terrible movie. It has plenty of positive elements in its favor, such as stunning visuals, an interesting concept that should easily grab the attention of most, as well as tackling some real life problems that too many individuals can undoubtedly relate to. It’s far from perfect though and certainly suffers its share of problems such as some slower moments that may have trouble keeping the attention of many viewers and a lack of accompanying information in many areas that can lead to some confusion at times. Yet at its core one can’t disregard the powerful messages, plenty of truly warmhearted moments and a slew of breathtaking visual beauty. While many adults will probably enjoy it at least to an extent, I feel as if the younger audience is bound to have a much more rewarding experience with ‘A Wrinkle in Time’. Aside from a few mildly scary moments and some bullying elements that are by no means glorified or unaddressed, it shouldn’t have much in the way of questionable content liable to upset parents, and at the same time serves up plenty that somewhat younger viewers are likely to thoroughly appreciate and quite possibly even want to revisit.

Overall, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ is a fairly entertaining, sweet and at times incredibly heartwarming magical adventure into the unfamiliar that’s also plagued by its share of issues. The film is definitely geared far more to younger audiences and as such obviously won’t be for everyone, although I would still recommend it to anyone that’s already interested, as well as to the homes with kids eager to see it. Still, I would strongly suggest renting it prior to purchasing a copy of the Blu-ray release if possible for those who haven’t yet seen the movie as many of the adult viewers (and even some of the older kids) may not be too fond of it, let alone overly inclined to revisit it down the road. Nonetheless it should still make a solid selection for a family movie night rental at the very least for those anxious to check it out.
