More than three years ago, 2% of the world’s population inexplicably vanished. 140 million people, gone in an instant. No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: Zero. This is the setting for a tale of two families: the Garveys, who have moved to this special place, and whose lives were forever changed by the Departure, and the Murphys, a local family, who seem to have been spared from an event that shook the rest of the world. But even in the town of Miracle, you can’t escape your past.
The second season of ‘The Leftovers’ kicks off shortly after the first season concluded with a new setting and a new family joining the Garvey’s in the central focus. As Kevin, Nora, Jill and their newest addition to the family move to a town in Texas which just happens to be the only known location with zero departures on that tragic day, therefore landing the town with the nickname Miracle which is in fact the name of the local park, they move in next door to a seemingly friendly and innocent family named the Murphy’s. Yet when the Murphy’s youngest child mysteriously vanishes the night of their arrival, and from a location Kevin just happened to awake at the same night with no memory of the events which occurred, things take a dangerous turn and it soon becomes apparent that even in a town such as this, no one is ever truly safe.
The sophomore (as well as the penultimate) season of ‘The Leftovers’ continues the story of Kevin Garvey and many other central characters from the first season, while also serving as its own story in many ways. Altering the prime location, this time bringing us to a town referred to as Miracle, Texas where miraculously no departures occurred on that dreadful day years ago. Bringing fresh new mysteries and additional oddly ambiguous events to the table, while also following previous storylines and as unbelievable as it may seem, taking the show to another level of mind twisting and wildly odd.
With series creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta (based upon Perotta’s own novel) still heavily involved, the middle chapter in this outstanding series speeds along with a simultaneously beautiful and unsettling pace that is sure to immediately pull viewers in. The second season of ‘The Leftovers’ only improves on the already phenomenal debut season and has easily placed the show as one of my absolute favorite currently running television series; anxiously anticipating where the final season may takes us.
Many fellow fans of the wonderful and mind-twisting series ‘The Leftovers’ will quite likely want to make certain to pick up a copy of The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray to add to their collections. While some will undoubtedly be disappointed by the lack of bonus content on the release this time around, the generally fantastic high definition video and audio presentations on the Blu-ray alone will surely make it a must own for many of the fans who want to relive the season time and again in order to try and decipher all of the little tidbits of information, wonder and mayhem sprinkled throughout its ten episodes.
Overall, while some fans may be deterred by the complete lack of any supplemental material included on the release this time around, many fans will still want to make sure to pick up a copy of ‘The Leftovers: The Complete Second Season’ on Blu-ray to add to their collections, with the solid high definition video and audio presentations justifying the purchase. Those who may not have yet had the pleasure of the second season and were fans of the first; I would definitely recommend trying to rent the season at the very least if you’re hesitant toward a blind purchase, this is one truly amazing season of television that you won’t want to miss out on.
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Leftovers: The Complete Second Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the sophomore seasons episodes. The video presentations look pretty solid as a whole, delivering sharp and detailed video presentations on each episode that with the exception of some noticeable banding on occasion in a few notably dark moments generally hold up even during the darkly lit and/or fast moving sequences, nothing occurring on screen ever becoming distorted, let alone rendered indiscernible. Overall, these are solid high definition video presentations that while not quite perfect, still look fantastic should still easily satisfy the majority of fans.
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 10 Season Two episodes. These lossless multichannel soundtracks sound magnificent, providing clean, discrete and often quite aggressive audio presentations on every episode in the season, utilizing all five available channels in order to fully immerse the viewer in the world on screen, with odd and eerie, as well as explosive and hard-hitting auditory effects often swarming throughout the speakers, as well as the perfectly fitting soundtrack exploding into every channel at times with clean and gorgeous perfection, while never resulting in any dialogue which may be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered inaudible in any way. Overall, these are fantastic 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA soundtracks that should thrill fans of the series.
The Blu-ray release of ‘The Leftovers: The Complete Second Season’ unfortunately doesn’t contain any supplemental material whatsoever.
