A Review By: Kevin Lovell

Disc Rating: 8/10

Synopsis:

Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman and Danny Aiello star in LÉON: THE PROFESSIONAL, a go-for-broke thriller about a professional assassin whose work becomes dangerously personal. Calling himself a “cleaner,” the mysterious Léon is New York’s top hitman. When his next-door neighbors are murdered, Léon becomes the unwilling guardian of the family’s sole survivor – 12-year-old Mathilda. But Mathilda doesn’t just want protection; she wants revenge. Training her in the deadly tricks of his trade, Léon helps her track the psychotic agent who murdered her family. From the electrifying opening to the fatal finale, LÉON THE PROFESSIONAL is a nonstop crescendo of action and suspense. Experience both the U.S. theatrical and international versions of this beloved action masterpiece, now fully remastered in 4K.

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luc Besson, ‘Léon the Professional’ still holds up today in every way and remains one of my favorite films of all time. Following a young girl whose family was brutally murdered, an attack which she narrowly escaped and her quiet neighbor, a professional assassin with an awkward nature who was kind enough to take her in and the unique bond subsequently formed between the two as everything in their lives change as a result. Guided with a perfectly suited uneasy grace by Luc Besson and featuring memorable performances by Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman in her debut role, ‘Léon the Professional’ is filmmaking at its finest and a true masterpiece.

Fans of Luc Besson’s acclaimed classic ‘Léon the Professional’ will without question want to make certain to pick up a copy of either the Limited Edition Supreme Cinema Series Blu-ray or the new standard Blu-ray release to add to their collections. This latest Blu-ray edition easily marks the most impressive and gorgeous version of the film by far, featuring both cuts of the film and sporting an absolutely gorgeous new high definition video transfer mastered in 4K in addition to a new Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) audio presentation. While the release doesn’t contain a great deal in the way of bonus content and I’m fairly certain all of that which is included was also available on previous releases of the title, these stellar new video and audio presentations will easily make this release a must own regardless.
