Synopsis:
Johnny Depp delivers the performance of a lifetime as Edward, an irresistibly charming creation with razor-sharp metal hands and a heart of gold. Edward’s lonely life in a Gothic castle changes forever when he meets a kindhearted Avon Lady (Dianne Wiest), who takes him to a pastel paradise known as Suburbia. Thanks to his fantastic talents, Edward becomes a neighborhood sensation, but when he falls in love with Kim (Winona Ryder), he must go to extraordinary lengths to protect her.
Acclaimed director Tim Burton’s masterpiece ‘Edward Scissorhands’ tells the story of an artificially created man named Edward (Depp) whose creator died prior to his completion, leaving Edward with Scissors in place of hands. Living alone in an eerie mansion atop the hill for some time, when Avon lady Peg (Wiest) discovers his presence there, she promptly brings him home to live with her family where Edward fits strangely in among the quirky neighbors and quickly develops a fascination with Peg’s daughter Kim (Ryder). Featuring a phenomenal score by longtime Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman and memorable performances from Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and many more, ‘Edward Scissorhands’ is a beautiful and moving gem of a film that still holds up twenty five years after its initial release.
Many fans of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and Tim Burton’s work in general will likely want to make certain to pick up a copy of the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release to add to their collections. While unfortunately the release is somewhat lacking in the area of supplemental material, it does include a few extra goodies such as 2 Audio Commentary tracks and a bit more (more detailed information regarding the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below), not to mention a wonderful lossless audio soundtrack presentation. Most importantly though is the beautiful new high definition video presentation remastered in 4K which is the one factor which will likely make the release a must own, at least for many of the diehard fans. A Collector’s Edition Gift Set release with fancier packaging and some additional physical goodies is also available which may be more enticing to some.
VIDEO:
The 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ features a new full 1080p High Definition presentation remastered in 4K and utilizing the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The new video presentation looks fantastic, delivering a rich and detailed video presentation throughout that beautifully represents the warm, vivid colors that are always prominently on display in the film, while still maintaining some mild grain and other artifacts representative of its source and holding up impressively throughout; never causing anything occurring on screen to become negatively affected or rendered indiscernible during the fast moving or more darkly lit sequences. Overall, this is a top notch new high definition video presentation that should easily please the fans of this classic.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a lossless 4.0 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless soundtrack sounds wonderful, providing a smooth, clean audio presentation from start to end, utilizing all four available channels in order to fully immerse the viewer with Danny Elfman’s eerily moving score in addition to some crowd chatter and other suitably fitting auditory elements, while never resulting in any dialogue which may be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered inaudible. Overall, this is a solid 4.0 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that shouldn’t disappoint.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ unfortunately doesn’t contain a great deal in the way of bonus content, although it does include a few extras. Included on the release are 2 Audio Commentary tracks; the first with Director Tim Burton and the second with Composer Danny Elfman. We are also treated to an old Featurette for the film (running approximately 5 minutes in length) and 2 Theatrical Trailers.
