Synopsis:

A group of soldiers dispatched to the Scottish Highlands on special training maneuvers face their biggest fears after they run into Captain Ryan – the only survivor of a Special Ops team that was literally torn to pieces. Ryan refuses to disclose his mission even though whoever attacked his men might be hungry for seconds. Help arrives in the form of local girl who shelters them in a deserted farmhouse deep in the forest…but when they realize that they are surrounded by a pack of blood-lusting werewolves, it’s apparent their nightmare has just begun!

There aren’t too many werewolf films that I hear praised and referred to on the level of the cult classic ‘Dog Soldiers’, the feature length directorial debut from writer and director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) and after personally viewing the film for the first time via this great Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray release from Scream Factory, I can certainly understand why. Filled with a more than capable cast including Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Emma Cleasby, Liam Cunningham and more, and expertly guided by first time filmmaker Marshall, ‘Dog Soldiers’ is a blood soaked good time from start to end. Complimented by impressive practical effects, this is a film that surely had a small budget and yet still manages to hold up nearly a decade and a half later.

VIDEO:

Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray release of ‘Dog Soldiers’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty impressive, especially when taking into consideration the likely quality of the source. There are some lines and video noise, along with some heavy grain present at times, but nothing that detracts from the overall viewing experience, and almost certainly due to the source and no error in the mastering of the video. Overall, this is a pretty solid high definition video presentation that should please the majority of fans.

AUDIO:

The Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless multichannel soundtrack is crisp, discrete and surprisingly active. All five channels are regularly utilized to surround the viewer with the score in addition to any number of action-oriented auditory elements, such as numerous occurrences of bullets whizzing past; all the while never causing any dialogue that may be occurring simultaneously to become negatively affected or distorted in any way. Overall, this 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA soundtrack is quite impressive and adds a great deal of fun to the viewing experience.
