Plot Summary:
A young punk drifter heading to Vegas to pay off his gambling debt before the Russian mafia kills him, is forced to stop in a Arizona town where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong for him.
‘U Turn’ is definitely one of Oliver Stone’s stranger and darker directorial efforts, but without question a masterpiece in its own right and one that has certainly held up admirably in the nearly two decades since it was initially unleashed upon audiences. I can still remember seeing it in theaters myself (in my late teens at the time) and if anything I have only found that I appreciate this wonderfully dark, twisted and bleak gem of a film even more so now. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of it before, I would highly recommend checking ‘U Turn’ out. In addition to being directed by the legendary Oliver Stone, it also features an impressive cast including the likes of Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Joaquin Phoenix, Billy Bob Thornton, Claire Danes and more, all of whom are at the top of their game here.
Fellow fans of both ‘U Turn’ and Oliver Stone’s work in general will definitely be thrilled that the movie is finally arriving home on Blu-Ray for the first time ever and they will certainly want to make sure to pick up a copy to add to their collections. VIDEO:
The Twilight Time Limited Edition Blu-Ray release of ‘U Turn’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole, the bright and warm colors look magnificent and all of the detail and movement, not to mention the vast scenery, look fantastic throughout, while still maintaining a bit of grain and other intended elements of the film as well. Overall, this is a pretty impressive high definition video presentation that should have fellow fans of Oliver Stone’s classic pretty satisfied.
AUDIO:
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless multichannel soundtrack is very solid overall, taking advantage of all five available channels to surround the viewer with the films perfectly kooky score, crickets chirping, an occasional gun blast and more, while also keeping any dialogue that might be occurring simultaneously from becoming distorted or inaudible in any way. Overall, this is a more than capable 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that should not disappoint in the slightest.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Twilight Time Limited Edition Blu-Ray release of ‘U Turn’ does include some solid extras. Included on the release is an ‘Isolated Score Track’ along with two Audio Commentary tracks; the first Audio Commentary features Director Oliver Stone and the second features Producer/Production Executive Mike Medavoy and film Historian Nick Redman. Also included are an Introduction to U Turn from Oliver Stone, the Original Theatrical Trailer and a full color booklet with an essay discussing the film by Julie Kirgo.
