From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Best Animated Feature, Spirited Away, 2002) comes a spellbinding movie beyond compare. Experience “perhaps the greatest animated film the cinema has ever seen” (David Ehrlich, Film.com) on Blu-ray.

Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Gianni Caproni. Nearsighted and unable to be a pilot, he becomes one of the world’s most accomplished airplane designers, experiencing key historical events in an epic tale of love, perseverance and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulentworld.

Bring home the film that has dazzled fans and critics around the globe. Bursting off the screen with spectacular picture and sound and featuring fascinating bonus material, Miyazaki’s Academy Award-nominatedmasterpiece, The Wind Rises, is breathtaking on Blu-ray.

‘The Wind Rises’ is the powerful and emotional story of Jirô; following his challenges and perseverance to do what he has always dreamed and the twists and turns his life takes along the way in his attempts to realize his dream. As he deals with family, a woman who he has feelings for but he can’t seem to find and his vision problems keeping him from ever being able to pilot planes; he nonetheless journeys to become one of the most prominent designers of planes during the World War II era, following his goal no matter what may be required in order to realize it after a meeting with a man in a dream convinces him it’s possible.

The latest and (if I’m not mistaken) final film from acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (who writes and directs) ‘The Wind Rises’ is certainly a notable final entry in his already impressive career. As is frequently the case with the English Dubbed versions of his movies, ‘The Wind Rises’ features an impressive collection of talented individuals portraying the characters’ voices. The English Dub voice cast includes some incredibly talented folks including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Martin Short, Mandy Patinkin, William H. Macy, Stanley Tucci, Elijah Wood and a number of others, all of whom do impressive work lending their hands (or voices) to the American dubbed version of this truly amazing piece of filmmaking.

‘The Wind Rises’ is an absolutely phenomenal film, and easily one of the best animated features of recent memory. The film is heartfelt, powerful and absolutely gorgeous both visually and emotionally. Such exceptionally beautiful animation accentuated so powerfully by an overall fantastic film is such a rare feat and this film does an impressive job proving that an animated film can be just as powerful and amazing as a live action one. I couldn’t possibly recommend ‘The Wind Rises’ highly enough; it’s a breathtaking animated gem from a monumental foreign filmmaker that is not to be missed.

The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Wind Rises’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks absolutely stunning, the bright colors and sharply detailed beauty of this animated film is perfectly captured here on Blu-Ray and it’s a wonder to behold with just how visually gorgeous this film is alone. This high definition video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and should have most folks absolutely thrilled.

The Blu-Ray release includes lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 Mono soundtracks for both the English Dubbed and Original Japanese Language versions of the film. While I usually prefer to watch films (animated or live action) in their original native language the majority of the time, I do on occasion make an exception and watch the English Dubbed version which I did here due to the impressive voice talent featured. Even with the choice (one can only assume the director’s preference) to use a 1 channel mono sound option for the film, this lossless soundtrack sounds quite impressive. Even with only one channel utilized, all of the noises including aircrafts, trains, along with background noise and the score sound surprisingly discrete and all flow smoothly, never conflicting with the dialogue or interchanging (audio) effects occurring simultaneously.

The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Wind Rises’ also includes some nice bonus content. Included on the release is a featurette titled ‘The Wind Rises: Behind The Microphone’ which features interviews with a number of those involved with the English Dubbed version including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and more, who explain the attention to detail and challenges involved in dubbing a film already in another language. Also included is the entire film in Storyboard form which is quite a nice little treat. A number of Original Japanese Trailers and TV Spots as well as a Press Conference for the ‘Announcement of the Completion of the Film’ which features an entire hour plus press conference with writer/director Hayao Miyazaki and others are additionally included.
