Disc Rating: 9/10
Plot Summary:
Before there were parenting blogs, trophies for showing up, and peanut allergies, there was a simpler time called the ’80s. For geeky 11-year old Adam these were his wonder years and he faced them armed with a video camera to capture all the crazy.
Creator Adam F. Goldberg takes you back to the wonderful world of the 1980’s in ‘The Goldbergs’ with a not only hilarious, but heartwarming and well written sitcom, influenced by his own family growing up and all of the adventures and family moments he personally recorded on his own video camera over the years. The show does a very impressive job with maintaining and recreating the 80’s timeframe which really helps to transport you back into this era and if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of this series, I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
The series includes a pretty impressive and talented cast, including the likes of Jeff Garlin, Wendi McLendon-Covey, the always hilarious George Segal, plus Patton Oswalt (of who I’m personally a huge fan) as the Narrator and a number of others, most of which all deliver pretty solid performances in their respective roles.
While ‘The Goldbergs’ will be making the move to Wednesday nights this fall when the series returns for its sophomore season, you can now own all 23 episodes from Season One is this 3-Disc DVD Collection which includes very solid video and audio quality for a DVD and a pretty nice collection of bonus content as well (detailed information regarding the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below) making it well worth picking up a copy for fans who still don’t mind (or even prefer) the DVD format to add to their collections so they can relive the first season of this heartwarming and hilarious flashback to the 80’s anytime they like.
VIDEO:
The DVD release of ‘The Goldbergs: The Complete First Season’ is presented in a 16×9 friendly 1.78:1 aspect ratio on all of the first seasons episodes, representing the widescreen aspect ratio in which it was originally broadcast. The video quality looks pretty solid overall as far as DVD quality goes. The colors are sharp, the movement never gets too messy and altogether this is a pretty top notch DVD transfer that should leave fans pretty satisfied.
AUDIO:
The DVD release includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel lossy multichannel soundtrack on all 23 of the first season’s episodes. While there isn’t a whole lot of frequent activity throughout all five channels (although that’s expected for a sitcom) this Dolby Digital soundtrack is smooth, discrete and sounds pretty great for what it is.
