Plot Summary:

Rick Grimes is a former Sheriff’s deputy who has been in a coma for several months after being shot while on duty. When he wakes, he discovers that the world has been taken over by zombies, and that he seems to be the only person still alive. After returning home to discover his wife and son missing, he heads for Atlanta to search for his family. Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the zombies on arrival in Atlanta, he is aided by another survivor Glenn who takes Rick to a camp outside the town. There Rick finds his wife Lori and son Carl, along with his partner/best friend Shane and a small group of survivors who struggle to fend off the zombie hordes; as well as competing with other survivor groups who are prepared to do whatever it takes to survive.

Warning: This review contains heavy spoilers from Season Three and mild spoilers from Season Four!!

The fourth season of ‘The Walking Dead’ picks up where Season Three left off, with our group still held up safely in the prison and having taken in the rest of the folks from Woodberry after a brutal confrontation which resulted in The Governor and some of his most trusted enforces vanishing. The fourth season initially focuses on a virus spreading throughout the prison and shortly after catching up with our group, we are taken back to see what has become of The Governor following his vanishing after the final confrontation. There are definitely some heartfelt, intense and even shockingly brutal moments this season as our group goes from life at the prison to what lies next for each of them beyond it.

The hit series ‘The Walking Dead’ arrives home once again with all sixteen episodes of its fourth season together on Blu-Ray for the first time, featuring exceptional video and audio quality, far surpassing the quality it was originally broadcast in, with impressive 1080p High Definition picture and stellar 7.1 channel lossless audio. If that alone isn’t enough to convince you, there is also an entire disc dedicated to the impressive collection of bonus content included on the release (detailed information regarding this can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage of the review below) which makes this a must own and fans of the series will without question want to make sure to pick up a Blu-ray copy of the release to add to their collections as soon they’re able.

VIDEO:

The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the fourth seasons episodes. The video presentation looks exceptional with all of the colors sharp, even fast moving sequences adequately detailed and solid looking overall, with no noticeable faults to be found within. It also certainly doesn’t hurt that the episodes are provided a more than sufficient bitrate with only four episodes per disc. I’m pretty certain fans of the series will be more than satisfied with these high definition video presentations for season four.

AUDIO:

The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on all 16 Season Four episodes. The lossless 7.1 soundtracks on the episodes are probably the high point of the release in my opinion, providing truly impressive, discrete and hard hitting fun that is almost up there with some film soundtracks. The balance and alternating between quiet and tame moments, to hard hitting and explosive ones are perfectly handled and these 7.1 Dolby TrueHD tracks never disappoint or fail to impress.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season’ includes a hefty quantity of bonus content, in fact with an entire disc dedicated solely to the extras. Included on the release are a number of featurettes, including ‘Inside The Walking Dead’ & ‘The Making of The Walking Dead’ featurette’s for every one of the sixteen episodes. In addition to those 32 featurette’s, we are treated to a number more as well: ‘Hershel’ ‘The Governor Is Back’ ‘Society, Science & Survival’ ‘Inside KNB EFX’ and ‘A Journey Back to Brutality.’ If all of those featurette’s weren’t enough for you alone, also included are Audio Commentaries on Episodes 1, 5, 9, 12 & 14, Extended Episodes on Episodes 9, 14 & 16 (although I believe 16 is more of an alternate/uncut episode as opposed to extended) and a number of deleted scenes for various episodes in the season. As you can clearly see, this Blu-Ray release is absolutely jam-packed with extra goodies that should leave the fans entertained well after they finish watching or re-watching the season’s episodes.
