Imagine a world where all technology – computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights – has suddenly and mysteriously blacked out…everywhere. What’s left is a post-apocalyptic landscape inhabited by ruthless paramilitary groups, heroic freedom fighters – and a family struggling to survive in this epic adventure thriller from Supernatural’s Eric Kripke and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. Seen through the eyes of a fiercely determined young woman, Charlie Matheson, REVOLUTION follows a rogue band of rebels – including Charlie’s secretive mother Rachel and estranged uncle Miles, a former marine and militia leader – as they face danger at every turn in an attempt to overthrow the Militia, and ultimately return power to the people.
Warning: This review contains heavy spoilers from Season One and mild spoilers from Season Two!!
The second season of ‘Revolution’ picks up a short while after the events that occurred in the season one finale. Our heroes (so to speak) managed to get the power online, but only moments after doing so; a psychotic military man sends nuclear missiles out to hit a number of states in the US. While Aaron tries to shut down the power again before they can reach their destinations, the system freezes and the nukes hit, making things even worse than they were before and once again leaving everyone in the dark. Season Two subsequently finds our group in Texas, held up in a makeshift community until Miles is taken by a madman and Rachel is forced to go and rescue him, along with the help of her father.
Unfortunately Miles’ rescue results in the supposed ‘American Government’ finding its way into this town to save them all, or at least that is what they claim their intentions are. Soon Miles, Rachel and the others can’t help but question the reasons of these supposed ‘patriots’ who seem to link in many ways to the man who himself unleashed the nukes. Meanwhile Charlie is out searching for Monroe in order to get vengeance, but as one turn leads to another she ends up being forced to join forces with him against her better judgment.
The second and (sadly) final season of ‘Revolution’ delivers all of the swashbuckling action and intensity that it did last season and while it’s great to be able to add the final chapter of this series to our collections on Blu-Ray, it’s definitely sad to see it go so soon. It will nevertheless remain a notable and worthwhile series that I’ll surely be revisiting a number of times down the road as I’m sure many other fans will be doing for this unfortunately short lived yet fantastic series.
The Blu-Ray release delivers all 22 episodes in superb video and audio quality that far surpasses the already solid quality in which they were originally broadcast. It also includes a number of great special features, including (but certainly not limited to) deleted scenes on fourteen of the season’s episodes (detailed info on the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below). In short, fans of the series will definitely want to pick up a copy of the Blu-Ray to add to their collections so that they can revisit this fantastic series time and again.
The Blu-Ray release of ‘Revolution: The Complete Second And Final Season’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the second seasons episodes. The video presentation on the episodes looks outstanding, up to Warner’s usual Blu-Ray high standards. All of the colors are sharp, the activity and scenery detailed, with no bleeding, banding or other notable faults that could be found on my end. Fellow fans of the series should be more than pleased with the high definition video presentation on the show’s final season episodes.
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all 22 Season Two episodes. These are quite active lossless multichannel soundtracks, as one would probably expect with the action packed and overall frequently frenetic hectic and intense nature of this series. There are constantly noises, music and other elements making their way throughout all five channels and the bass is certainly never afraid to hit hard either. The episodes feature overall solid and impressive DTS-HD MA tracks that fans of the series and audiophiles alike should have a lot of fun with, I know I definitely did.
The Blu-Ray release of ‘Revolution: The Complete Second And Final Season’ also includes a pretty nice collection of bonus content. Included on the release are 4 new Featurettes that provide some interesting insight into the making of the series’ second season. The four featurettes are: ‘Revolution: Heading West’ ‘Impact Revolution: Conversations with the United Nations’ ‘United Nations: The Mission Continues PSA’ as well as ‘2013 Comic-Con Panel Q & A with Cast and Creators’. Also included on the release are Deleted Scenes for over half of the season’s episodes and a Gag Reel.
