Plot Summary:
A day-dreamer escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.
‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ is a truly fantastic film. It really has a magical feeling to it and is thrilling, emotional, heartwarming and just overall a wonderful experience. It also likely just took the spot of my favorite film of 2013. I’ve always been a fan of Ben Stiller and even more so of his outings as director. I’ve never been a huge fan personally of ‘Reality Bites’, but ‘Zoolander’ is one of my favorite comedy’s of all time, while ‘The Cable Guy’ and ‘Tropic Thunder’ are absolutely outstanding as well. Even with the love I have for all of those titles, I think it is safe to say that ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ is his best effort yet as director and I highly urge everyone to check it out. On top of the emotion and overall fantastic feeling this film gives off, the scenery is absolutely stunning as well and I think many will find it worth the watch for this reason alone, even if you may not be a huge fan of Stiller’s work like me.
As previously mentioned, Ben Stiller does a tremendous job as director on this one, but he also does a phenomenal job in the lead role and provides himself an opportunity to showcase some of his true talent as an actor. While not quite on caliber with ‘Permanent Midnight’ the role of Walter Mitty is nonetheless most certainly one of his most noteworthy performances to date. The rest of cast is marvelous as well, with Adam Scott (sporting a beard that is hilarious in itself), Sean Penn, Shirley Maclaine, Kristin Wiig, Patton Oswalt and a number of others who all give impressive performances in each of their respective roles.
VIDEO:
The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 2.40:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio. The video presentation here looks absolutely glorious. The films gorgeous landscapes and variety of scenery could not be on more beautiful display here and every aspect of the picture down to the edges and borders looks pretty fantastic with no notable flaws found within on my part.
AUDIO:
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack which sounds tremendous. The music and adventurous scenes, both in real life and Walter’s head really immerse you into the moment with this discrete and highly effective lossless multichannel soundtrack. The quiet moments are properly tame and the more emotional and exciting moments are accentuated by the soundtrack hitting hard from all seven channels in order to truly imbue the moment in the viewer. This is definitely a very impressive lossless multichannel soundtrack and I would highly recommend viewing the film with it utilized, should you have the capability to do so.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ features a pretty nice collection of bonus content. Included on the release is ‘The Look of Life’ featurette, ‘Pre-viz’, ‘Stay Alive’ Music Video by Jose Gonzalez, a number of Deleted, Extended and Alternate Scenes, some of which are actually quite great, in addition to a number of other great bonus features.
