Plot Summary:
An uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord.
‘The Heat’ takes a pretty basic formula and doesn’t make many changes to it. While some will say this is lazy and lacks creativity, others will agree that sometimes when you are treading in familiar waters, it’s best to leave alone what
works, and focus more on the smaller elements that will keep people laughing and enthralled throughout the ride and that is exactly what Paul Feig has done here. The good news is that it works flawlessly here. We have the standard buddy cop formula, the tough by the books FBI agent and the renegade cop who gets things done but plays by her own set of rules. You all know how this goes. Of course the two clash, and the hilarity ensues. Some may think I am being sarcastic in these remarks, but I can assure you that I am not. This movie is actually extremely enjoyable and will have you laughing from start to finish. It is smart enough not to try and be something that it is not, and to be the best of what it is, and it succeeds admirably at doing just that.
Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are both in very familiar territory for themselves in these roles. It really seems like they are having a lot of fun with this one and that certainly 
helps the viewer to do the same. I must admit McCarthy is without question the stand out performance in this one and at her vulgar best. She always manages to keep you laughing, and I’m not sure she managed one sentence without an f bomb. Granted that is most likely an exaggeration, but if you’ve seen the movie you know what I mean, and if you have yet to watch it, you’ll understand my loose use of the exaggeration when you do watch it. There are a number of other familiar faces here as well, including Demian Bichur (who I have recently started to really appreciate as an actor), Marlon Wayans, Michael Rapaport (who I really enjoy and we unfortunately don’t see nearly enough of these days), Jane Curtain in a wonderfully fitting role and a number of folks you sitcom fans out there are sure to recognize in addition throughout.
‘The Heat’ is a fun, entertaining and non-stop hilarious ride from start to end. While it’s not the perfect movie, it’s certainly incredibly smart and well done for what it is, and I know a number of people ranging from the ages of 25-65+ that have all thoroughly enjoyed the movie and couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. If you are a fan of the film you will definitely want to pick up the Blu-Ray which is an excellent release and also because the Blu-Ray contains the Unrated cut (approximately 3 minutes longer, clocking in at 120 minutes and change) as well as the theatrical cut, while the DVD release only includes the theatrical cut. If you have yet to see the film and don’t want to blind buy it, I would highly recommend renting it or watching on demand because you are very likely to enjoy it immensely.
VIDEO:
The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Heat’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 2.40:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio. The video presentation on the blu looks fantastic and is certainly up to par with the regular high standards of Fox’s Blu-Ray releases. Colors are solid, all details are sharp, and overall everything looks pretty spot on. I could not find a single flaw in the video presentation.
AUDIO:
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack which really contributes quite a bit to the overall experience of the film. Car chases and action sequences certainly aren’t afraid to utilize all of the 5.1 channels and the bass hits nice and hard in all the right moments. This lossless soundtrack is tame when it needs to be, but at the same time not afraid to really get the room shaking when an explosion hits and always allowing the dialogue in the center channel to be more that understandable. All of you fellow audiophiles out there should be more than pleased with this lossless 5.1 channel soundtrack.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The Blu-Ray release of ‘The Heat’ features hours of extras to keep you laughing for a long time following your viewing of the film. The Blu-Ray release features both the Unrated and Theatrical version of the film (while the DVD features solely the theatrical release) as well as a number of deleted, alternate and extended scenes, ‘Acting master class’ ‘Mullins family fun’ ‘Von Bloopers’ and 5 commentaries. That’s right, 5! What is really great about the commentaries is that in addition to the standard director commentary (which is one of the included commentaries as well) there are a number more, and believe it or not one of them is from Mystery Science Theater 3000, so you know that is definitely going to be a lot of fun.
