Synopsis:

Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum (Step Up) and Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) star in this revealing drama set in the world of exotic male dancing. Tatum plays Magic Mike, a womanizing hustler with an entrepreneurial spirit who makes his living on the stage. When he takes on a protege (Pettyfer) to instruct him in the fine art of hustling onstage and off, he finds himself falling for the newcomer’s sister (Cody Horn) — and questioning his life choices. Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh (Sex, Lies & Videotape, Ocean’s Eleven films) directs an all-star cast that also includes White Collar’s Matt Bomer, True Blood’s Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn and Matthew McConaughey as a former dancer and now owner of the club.

‘Magic Mike’ tells the story of Mike, a scheming male stripper and entrepreneur that has a talent for dancing on stage and getting what he wants from others, but his real dream is to create a custom furniture business. When a young man joins his construction team where he earns extra money, Mike soon takes the man under his wing and begins to teach him how to perform onstage and scheme off of it, but when Mike begins falling for the man’s sister it causes a shift in his perspective and results in him beginning to question his choices and current lifestyle while his new protégé starts fully embracing the life both for better and worse.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven) from a screenplay written by Reid Carolin (Dog), Soderbergh does a fully capable job at the helm of ‘Magic Mike’ guiding along the fun and chaos with heart and style. The film’s cast includes Channing Tatum (The Lost City), Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four), Matthew McConaughey (The Gentlemen), Cody Horn (End of Watch), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), Matt Bomer (TV’s Doom Patrol), Riley Keough (TV’s Under the Bridge), Joe Manganiello (TV’s True Blood), Kevin Nash (John Wick), Adam Rodriguez (TV’s Criminal Minds) and Gabriel Iglesias (TV’s The Santa Clauses) who each contribute solid and fitting performances altogether in their respective roles.

‘Magic Mike’ is a fun, vulgar and at times heartfelt look at the party-heavy life of one man who takes a younger prospect under his wing and teaches him how to strip, pick up women and embrace other aspects of the lifestyle that’s an everyday occurrence for Mike. It’s a surprisingly solid film that gained plenty of attention due to its concept of male strippers and that it stars Channing Tatum in a film that’s loosely based on part of his own life and while many would immediately believe it to be a film aimed at women, it’s really not for the most part and in fact delivers an exciting, funny and sexually driven journey of one young man who gets pulled into a lifestyle he never even contemplated and fully embraces the chaos that comes with it, while his mentor begins questioning his own path.

Notable filmmaker Steven Soderbergh does a solid job as director on ‘Magic Mike’ guiding along the tale with a great cast led by Channing Tatum that helps it to quickly stand out as more than a simple and unexciting ploy to get women into theaters. It quickly evolves into a character driven tale of life, uncertainty and dreams, while trying to truly enjoy what you must do while fighting to make that dream a reality. If you’ve never had the chance to check out ‘Magic Mike’ but are at all intrigued by the film, I would encourage giving it a chance whenever possible because you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by just how good of a film it actually is.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Magic Mike’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 presented in the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks magnificent altogether and delivers a sharp, clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues arising throughout. It shows tremendous detail noticeable on character faces, clothing and surroundings including the Florida streets and beaches, plus club and apartment interiors and more. The HDR-10 addition also nicely boosts much of the presentation by providing some more lifelike and vibrant colors noticeable on clothing and outdoor settings along with plenty of other tidbits, while black levels are rich, deep and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition video presentation that should have fans of the film thrilled.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is quite solid in its own right and offers a clean, crisp and often noticeably immersive audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, crowd noise and chatter, plus nature effects and plenty more regularly spreading throughout the various speakers, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a very nice 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up well throughout and shouldn’t elicit any complaints.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Magic Mike’ includes one extra; the behind the scenes Featurette ‘Backstage on Magic Mike’ (running approximately 7 minutes in length) which includes some interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage.
