Tom Clancy’s ‘Jack Ryan’ accompanies CIA analyst Jack Ryan whose career behind a desk takes a turn when he uncovers a plot that could lead to a massive terrorist attack. Forced into the field to assist with the case due to his knowledge of the players and situation, it quickly proves to only be the beginning. Jack’s work puts his talents to the test as he’s repeatedly thrust into one dangerous field assignment after another in various countries and locations across the globe and showcases his dedication to doing the right thing as his merits and moral compass are regularly tested along the way.

‘Jack Ryan’ was created for television by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, based on characters by Tom Clancy. The series features a largely rotating cast throughout its run and stars John Krasinski and Wendell Pierce as regulars in every season, while also featuring many other cast members in key roles throughout one or multiple seasons including Michael Kelly, Abbie Cornish, Betty Gabriel, John Hoogenakker, Adam Bernett and more, with the majority each providing fully capable performances in each of their respective roles, while Krasinski who just might offer the best portrayal of Ryan we’ve seen so far.

‘Jack Ryan’ is a thrilling, action-packed and visually breathtaking ride that joins our hero as he journeys across various countries and locales taking on some of the most difficult assignments imaginable and repeatedly finding one way or another to succeed and overcome these often seemingly hopeless missions. The series has an impressive look to it throughout its entire run and takes viewers to numerous locations along with our lead and showcases the visually spectacular sights of each, while consistently serving up some tense, brutal and outstanding action and chase sequences that look remarkable at every turn, often looking superior to many fairly big-budget films and delivering a cinematic thrill-ride in every season that only leaves the viewer anxiously anticipating more.

The series is so enjoyable, well cast and engaging that the most disappointing thing about the series is probably that it only ran for a total of thirty episodes over the course of four seasons. While it offers somewhat of an ending to the tale, it leaves it largely open at the same time; something that shouldn’t surprise many fans due to the franchise’s decades long run in one form or another since originating with Tom Clancy’s iconic novels and never hesitating to explore different points in Ryan’s life and career. Those who haven’t had the opportunity to give the series a chance but tend to enjoy a globe-trekking action series that goes out of its way to introduce clever and exciting new storylines and characters throughout its run will definitely want to make a point of checking this one out and shouldn’t be the slightest bit disappointed with what it has to offer.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Jack Ryan: The Complete Series; Now Available From Paramount 3

Paramount Home Entertainment brings home ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ in an 8-disc 4K Ultra HD collection that features all thirty episodes of the series from all four seasons in one collection. The release features every episode from the series in full Ultra High Definition with HDR-10 on the first two seasons and Dolby Vision and HDR-10 on the final two seasons and they all look quite tremendous. The nice UHD video presentations are greatly complemented by DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtracks on season one and two and Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks on season three and four which all offer great, clean and hard hitting audio presentations that don’t disappoint. The extras are definitely a bit on the lighter side but numerous Deleted Scenes from every season at least are included within.

Fans that have already picked up seasons of the series on 4K should be aware that the discs are identical to the previous releases, but for the fans who only own some or all of the seasons on Blu-ray or don’t actually own any of the series just yet, this new 4K Ultra HD set for The Complete Series brings home the entire collection for a more reasonable price. If you don’t own any previous 4K releases of the series and are considering a purchase, then this complete collection is definitely recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Jack Ryan: The Complete Series’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation on all 30 episodes of the series, although curiously with changes in aspect ratio and HDR switching up throughout all four seasons. Season One is presented in 2160p with HDR-10 and a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio, while Season Two is presented in 2160p with HDR-10 and a 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. Season Three features a 2160p presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 and a 2.20:1 Aspect Ratio, while the fourth and final season features a 2160p presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 and a 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio.

The video presentations all look quite great as a whole and provide sharp, clean and richly detailed presentations on every episode of the series with no notable troubles to be uncovered throughout. Detail is sharp and crisp on character faces, clothing, vehicles and interiors, not to mention the various gorgeous landscapes and locations on display throughout the series, while even the fast moving action sequences and darkly lit areas look solid and clean. The HDR (whether it be the Dolby Vision on the final two seasons or the HDR-10 on the first two) complements it all splendidly with some deeper, more accurate and rich colors visible on clothing, uniforms and nature elements, which is all beautifully boosted by deep, rich and problem free black levels. Overall, these are very nice Ultra High Definition video presentations that do their job well and should have fans satisfied with the results.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on all of Seasons One and Two, while Seasons 3 and 4 feature a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on each episode. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations for the third and fourth season with the Dolby Atmos soundtracks.

These multichannel soundtracks all sound quite good overall and even with the first two seasons not offering the additional channels they serve up consistently immersive and hard hitting audio presentations that never seem lackluster or underwhelming in their delivery. They repeatedly take advantage of all available channels in order to send music, gunshots, explosions and debris, along with vehicle activity, crowd chatter and a great deal more whipping throughout the various speakers regularly, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, these are all great and heavily aggressive DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that have no trouble pulling you into the action while shaking the room at the same time and fans should be quite pleased with them as a whole.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Jack Ryan: The Complete Series’ doesn’t include a great deal in the way of bonus content, but does include ‘Deleted Scene(s)’ from multiple episodes in every season of the series (running approximately 34 minutes in length altogether).
