A Review By: Kevin Lovell

Disc Rating: 8/10

Plot Summary:

A New Jersey family moves to an affluent gated community composed entirely of extraterrestrials.

Just in case you missed out on this one last year, let me give you a quick summary of the sho. ‘The Neighbors’ is the story of your ordinary all American family, who are all too happy to move into a nice new home in a great neighborhood and can’t believe their luck on the incredible deal they attained on the property. Of course they find out all too soon that the neighbors in this community are very unique and a little odd. They are in fact aliens masquerading in disguise as humans and have just welcomed their first human family into their community. Then, as I’m sure you can guess, the fun and hilarity ensues.

‘The Neighbors’ is a very smart and witty comedy that has plenty of laughs, and is also a show that most of the family should be able to sit down and enjoy together. There are characters of all ages, races and sexes for most everyone tn.s01-02-1to relate to, and the show also subtly hints at the differences between cultures, and the message that while we may be different in many ways, we always have our similarities and can find friends and family in the most surprising places at times. Though those messages are not jammed down your throat or overdone, they are certainly noticeable. While there may be some mildly crude content, I can certainly guarantee the level of it is an enormous step down from probably the majority of other sitcoms you will find on network television.

I personally have really come to adore this series, and have found myself becoming quite fond of almost every single character, which I always feel is a rare thing in my case. I usually have no problem finding a character I just can’t stand, but I have grown to love most all of the characters in this series.

‘The Neighbors: The Complete First Season’ is 22 episodes of fun and laughter for the entire family, and once you catch up be sure to watch the shows second season which is currently airing after ‘Last Man Standing’ Friday’s on ABC.

VIDEO:

The video presentation on this DVD release is in a 16×9 friendly 1.78:1 aspect ratio representing the aspect ratio in which it was originally broadcast. As far as DVD releases go it looks pretty nice. Everything is sharp, specific and clear and pretty top notch for a DVD release. Everyone should be pretty satisfied with this season set as far as the DVD quality is concerned.

AUDIO:

The audio on this release is a Dolby Digital 5.1 multichannel soundtrack which sounds quite nice. The audio is crisp, clear, and all channels appear to be properly placed. The audio on the DVD release is a nice upgrade from the TV broadcast, mainly because of the added detail and clarity of a studio soundtrack as opposed to a broadcasted soundtrack, which I’ve personally found is always somewhat superior.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

While this set is not chock full of extras, it does included a gag reel and some deleted scenes that are likely to keep the family busy for a bit after finishing all 22 episodes in the season.

Disc Rating: 8/10
