Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. ‘Greenland’ tells the harrowing tale of family man John Garrity who along with his estranged wife and son must embark upon a dangerous quest for survival when a massive comet crashes into the planet and begins what is expected to be a planet killing event. Having been randomly selected for shelter relocation only to be rejected due to his son’s illness, the family ends up separated and must fight their way through a world succumbing to anarchy as fire literally rains from the sky engulfing the world in flame. But for the Garrity family giving up doesn’t come easy and the family fights through the violence and catastrophic danger in a desperate attempt to reach shelter before it’s too late.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, Greenland 2) from a screenplay written by Chris Sparling (Buried), Ric Roman Waugh does a nice job at the helm of ‘Greenland’ guiding along the tense, explosive and surprisingly heartfelt tale along with style. The film’s cast includes Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), David Denman (Brightburn), Hope Davis (TV’s Your Honor), Roger Dale Floyd (Doctor Sleep), Holt McCallany (TV’s Mindhunter) and Scott Glenn (TV’s The Leftovers) with the majority offering capable and fitting performances for the most part in each of their roles.

‘Greenland’ is a powerful, explosive and wildly intense ride that’s as emotional and heartfelt as it is chaotic and thrilling. It’s a clever disaster film that bothers to introduce you to a family and other side characters that are easy to relate to and root for and allows you to become at least moderately familiar with them prior to sending their entire world into utter chaos while they desperately try to reach a place of safety before the majority of the world’s population is eradicated. It benefits from the solid guidance of director Ric Roman Waugh and the capable cast led by Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin paired with some stunning visual and audio effects that help to seal the deal and keep the tension and excitement coming at full speed once it gets moving.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Greenland; Now Available From Lionsgate 3

‘Greenland’ arrives home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time courtesy of Lionsgate, released alongside the 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases of the sequel ‘Greenland 2: Migration’ (you can also read my Blu-ray review of that release HERE) and in a somewhat unexpected move Lionsgate did not make 4K review product available for the sequel but was able to send over a copy of this one in the format. The new 4K Ultra HD release arrives sporting an incredibly nice full Ultra High Definition presentation of the film with HDR-10 (sorry Dolby fans, no Vision or Atmos is featured on this one) paired with the 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that was included on Universal’s previous Blu-ray and the film looks and sounds awfully outstanding to say the least.

This 4K/BD combo pack release also includes the original Blu-ray disc (somewhat amusingly even retaining the Universal Pictures label and logo on the BD disc) along with the previously released extras available on both discs. If you’re a fan of this one that would love to own it in 4K and are contemplating a purchase it’s definitely recommended, especially if you can find it at the right price.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Greenland’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with HDR-10 presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks outstanding as a whole and it delivers a clean, sharp and immaculately detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any noticeable issues while providing plenty of improvement over the Blu-ray from years prior. Detail is wonderful on everything from character specifics to the raining comet fragments and explosions, while the HDR fine tunes many of the vibrant colors like the orange-tinted sky and other elements which are paired with deep, rich and rewarding black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up beautifully throughout and should excite fans of the film that have been hoping to see a UHD upgrade.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack that appears to be identical to that released on the previous Blu-ray from Universal. While many fans may be disappointed at the lack of a new Dolby Atmos inclusion considering how wildly immersive and hard hitting the film’s soundtrack is, revisiting the film here in 4K for the first time since reviewing Universal’s Blu-ray years prior I can certainly reaffirm that this 7.1 soundtrack is an absolute blast that’s jam-packed with aggressive and fully engulfing effects that throw you right in the middle of the chaos and it still holds up incredibly well across the board.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Greenland’ offers the same collection of extras included on the previous Blu-ray release from Universal and they’re included on both the 4K and BD discs. The included extras are an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Ric Roman Waugh and Producer Basil Iwanyk’, plus a few ‘Deleted Scenes’ with Introductions by Director Ric Roman Waugh (running approximately 8 minutes in length overall with the introductions). The very brief Behind the Scenes Featurette ‘Humanity’ (running approximately 1 minute) is also included.
