‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ invites fans back into Scott’s world for a unique new animated twist on the tale we all know and love. The series joins Scott as he tries to uncover the identity of the girl of his dreams; Ramona Flowers, only to discover that if he hopes to date her that he will have to face each of her evil-exes first. But this time around after seemingly being defeated by the first evil-ex Scott mysteriously vanishes with no explanation. The animated series was created for television by BenDavid Grabinski and Bryan Lee O’Malley and runs for a total of 8 episodes. The American version of the series features the return of nearly the entire cast of the film reprising their roles in voice including Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Anna Kendrick, and Jason Schwartzman along with more and they each perfectly fall back into the roles here and help in their own right to make this one as clever and fun as it is.

‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ serves up a clever, funny and wildly enjoyable twist on the graphic novels and film that reinvents the story in a drastically different way and only manages to offer up one fun turn and twist after another that will have fans of the franchise cheering and loving nearly every moment once this familiar story repeatedly heads in directions that they never would have expected. It’s like reuniting with old friends after more than a decade and this animated fantasy adventure does a splendid job of keeping the fun coming while keeping things familiar yet also significantly different in order to deliver a new twist on the beloved tale that stays true to its tone and style while turning just about everything else upside down in the best and most unexpected way possible.

The fact that nearly everyone from the film returns to contribute their voices for this limited series is really the icing on the cake and what makes it truly click. Even while the Japanese audio is additionally included on the Blu-ray, it’s one of the few rare occasions where I never hesitated to watch the English language version and I can’t imagine it being even remotely as nostalgic or enjoyable without these familiar voices back in action so to speak.

The video presentations look pretty great as a whole and offer clean, sharp and vibrantly colored presentations on each episode of the limited series. There are some noisier moments and sequences and while I didn’t catch this one on Netflix and am therefore unable to offer comparisons, it always seems to feel like the intended style of the animation and not a technical issue with the release. Details are fully fleshed out and look great while colors are bright, rich and gorgeous. Overall, these are very nice high definition presentations that should have fans of the series and franchise quite pleased.
