Synopsis:

THE HOUSEMAID is a wildly entertaining thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, based on the best-selling book. From director Paul Feig, the film plunges audiences into a twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie (Sweeney) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous — a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power. Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.

‘The Housemaid’ accompanies a struggling young woman named Millie who after a troubled past is beyond thrilled to receive a job as a live-in housemaid for a rich family in a luxurious home. But promptly after accepting the job and arriving at her new post to settle in, Millie starts to see the hidden side of the seemingly picturesque home life as the wife Nina repeatedly snaps and goes into violent bouts of rage as well as regularly blaming Millie for mistakes caused by her incorrect instructions. Fortunately kindhearted and gorgeous husband Andrew and his words of encouragement are just enough to help keep Millie from losing her mind. But when a weekend off leads to new complications it starts to pull back the curtain on the true horrors and chaos hidden behind locked doors.

Directed by Paul Feig (A Simple Favor, The Heat) from a screenplay written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (TV’s The Boys), based on the book by Freida McFadden, Feig does a solid job at the helm of ‘The Housemaid’ smoothly guiding along the tense and twisty ride. The film’s cast includes Sydney Sweeney (Christy), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), Brandon Sklenar (Drop), Michele Morrone (Subservience), and Elizabeth Perkins (Another Simple Favor) with most offering capable performances altogether although some are stronger than others and Seyfried tends to repeatedly steal the show with her unforgettable and often brutal performance.

‘The Housemaid’ is a wild, occasionally steamy and often surprisingly dark ride into the hidden world of a wealthy family and their new housemaid that’s packed with plenty of surprises and twisted turns that will keep viewers guessing throughout most of its duration. It doesn’t take long to get into the unsettling aspects as things quickly go from light and happy to dark and concerning only to continue building the dread and glimpses of crazy for much of the first half, then taking things for an unexpected turn in the second that sends the film from a tense and uneasy tone to a new level of brutal and crazy that dives fully into the chaos.

It’s clever, fun and at times unsettling as well and for the most part if offers a capable and twisty thriller that never fails to surprise or get under your skin. Even while it’s done very well in most regards and works precisely as it should, it does have some illogical moments and elements that make it a little harder to accept as things become increasingly darker and more brutal, yet its swift pace and approach help many of these minor issues to be largely disregarded once you become enthralled in it all and if you can just let go and enjoy the wild ride then you’re liable to really enjoy this unique thriller, as will fans of the novel who will surely want to see how the adaptation works and based on what I’ve been able to find (I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the novels but might have to add them to my list) it appears to stay surprisingly faithful for the most part.

[Blu-Ray Review] The Housemaid; Available March 17 From Lionsgate 3

Overall, ‘The Housemaid’ offers a wildly twisted, tense and at times somewhat shocking trip into darkness and the horrifying secrets that can be hidden behind locked doors. It’s packed with plenty of dark twists and turns, numerous unsettling situations and even a few quite steamy ones on top of it, often feeling reminiscent of many erotic thrillers from decades past, just with a much bigger, more complex and twisted tale behind it. Director Paul Feig does a capable job guiding along the dark tale and delving into notably darker territory than he often tends to, while his work behind the camera is repeatedly complemented by stellar and memorable performances by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar who each shine in their roles. Sydney Sweeney provides a fairly decent performance as well but never on the level of the other leads. If this one already has your attention piqued or you’re a fan of the director, cast or the book it’s based on, then ‘The Housemaid’ is definitely recommended and very much worth giving a chance.
