Synopsis:
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s New York Times bestselling novel, HAMNET tells the untold story behind one of Shakespeare’s most memorable works, Hamlet. It is an inspiring journey of love and the creative brilliance that shaped a legacy and became Shakespeare’s greatest masterpiece.
Based on the bestselling novel, ‘Hamnet’ tells the speculative story of a key part in the life of the iconic playwright William Shakespeare and the potential backstory behind his inspiration for creating ‘Hamlet’ one of his most beloved plays. It introduces us to William as a local tutor who meets an interesting woman and quickly falls in love. Before long the two are blessed with multiple children and a new life together, but when tragedy strikes the grief and guilt of the ordeal leads to the creation of what will eventually be one of the greatest tragedies of all time.
Directed by notable filmmaker Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) from a screenplay by Chloé Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell and based on the novel of the same name written by Maggie O’Farrell, Zhao does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘Hamnet’ guiding the emotionally riveting tale along with beauty, care and plenty of heart. The film’s cast includes Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Paul Mescal (Gladiator II), Emily Watson (TV’s Dune: Prophecy), Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Jacobi Jupe (Peter Pan & Wendy) with nearly all offering solid if not noteworthy performances in their respective roles and each helping this one to become as powerful as it is.
‘Hamnet’ is an emotional, touching and at times heartbreaking tale of a legend’s path to greatness and the beautiful and painful moments that contributed to leading him there, along with a strong focus on his family and both their heartwarming moments and the ordeals suffered. While in no way an entirely true story rooted in fact, it nonetheless does a remarkable job of fictionally creating this chapter in the brilliant playwright’s life and one could easily imagine some of these elements being quite close to the reality.
It’s not only a powerful story but one that is crafted almost impeccably thanks to numerous factors including an impressive attention to detail in fully creating this period in history and allowing every factor from interiors to the various city streets to look just as one might imagine they would at this point. Immense care is also put into every other tidbit from clothing and much more, while miraculously never allowing the visual splendor and detail to detract from this immensely moving and at times heart wrenching story of loss and grief, along with the importance of a family’s love above all. It’s all only further complemented by the careful and loving guidance of director Chloé Zhao and utterly spectacular performances by leads Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal which all come together to offer something unforgettable and incredibly special.
Overall, ‘Hamnet’ is an outstanding, emotionally riveting piece of cinema that explores the potential inspiration for Shakespeare’s Hamlet and delivers a passionate tale of family, love, hope and the grief of loss. It manages to craft a fitting balance of misery and beauty that will have you destroyed at one point and tearing up with happiness at others, taking your emotions for a rollercoaster ride that won’t soon be forgotten with an outstanding dedication to the visual recreation of the era. It also delivers a fantastic story which benefits immensely from the talented work of director Chloé Zhao as well as the powerful performances from stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. ‘Hamnet’ is very highly recommended, especially for any fans of the story itself or the cast and director, as well as anyone that is fascinated with the life and legacy of the talented playwright.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Hamnet’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks terrific and offers a sharp, clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable troubles or issues along the way. Detail is tremendous on character faces and attire, along with the intricate recreation of the period on display throughout that has everything from the expansive forest to city streets looking sharp and immaculate. The Dolby Vision HDR improves coloring on bits of clothing and the vibrant greens of forest trees, plus more, while black levels and shadowing are capably deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks incredibly nice at every turn and should have fans and newcomers both fully satisfied.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is very nice in its own right and it delivers a clean, crisp and often fully immersive audio presentation throughout. It should be no shock that it’s not overwhelmingly hard hitting at every turn considering the type of film, yet it still frequently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, crowd noise and plenty of nature elements like blowing wind and pouring rain throughout the various speakers, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that does its job well and shouldn’t elicit any complaints.
