‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ offers a new take on the twisted Holiday Horror classic. The new film follows drifting loner Billy Chapman who after witnessing the brutal murder of his parents as a child and becoming infested with a curious connection to the killer is now an adult who travels from town to town dressing as Santa and brutally slaughtering those that the killer’s voice informs him are naughty. But after years of following this pattern and letting the curse control him, Billy meets a woman that he can’t help but fall in love with which results in a hiccup that could change everything for better or for far worse.

Written and directed by Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn 2021, The Domestics) and based on the original 1984 film written by Michael Hickey and based on a story by Paul Caimi, Nelson does an impressive job at the helm of the new ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ guiding along the bloody and brutal fun with a surprising layer of heart and hope on top of it that helps it to stand out. The film’s cast includes Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), Ruby Modine (Happy Death Day), Mark Acheson (Peter Pan & Wendy), David Lawrence Brown (Orphan: First Kill) and David Tomlinson (Psycho Killer) who each provide generally solid and capable performances for the most part in their respective roles.

This new take on ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ (yes another one as it was also remade in 2012) takes the general concepts of the original 1980’s cult classic and then turns them into an entirely different story that actually works remarkably well in its own right and offers a fitting and fresh new take on the tale that still delivers all of the brutality and carnage fans might hope for; merely with a killer that you can actually get behind to some degree. It then does something even more surprising by adding a love story into the mix and perhaps even more shocking is that it actually works quite well and only complements the story as opposed to harming it.

The original ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ is an undeniable classic among horror fans and holds a special place in the genre to many, yet when comparing the two by the films alone there’s no question that this new take is a far better film with superior production values, story, script and acting; not to mention one that will likely also work better for a wider audience due to the likability of the killer. While that’s not to say anything negative against the many rewarding traits and the beloved cheesiness of the 1984 original, it’s still always a treat to see such care put into a new version of something and this reimagining does a tremendous job of making the new film very much its own while still including enough of the original’s ideas to attract fans on top of newcomers and actually managing to craft a surprisingly terrific film at the same time.

Overall, ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ serves up a fresh, clever and still wildly bloody and violent new take on the iconic 1980’s slasher that varies drastically while still making a film that should not only please but actually excite fans of the original as well as those who may not be too familiar with it or its legacy. The new ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ is very highly recommended, particularly for genre fans and those fond of the original (or even the previous reimagining) who should all find plenty to love about this fun, gruesome and endearing new take on the holiday horror story. If you’re already at all intrigued and tend to enjoy a solid slasher then this one should be well worth renting to give a whirl whenever possible and don’t be at all surprised if you end up wanting to add it to your collection soon after.
