Synopsis:
One year after the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a shocking new chapter of terror begins when former security guard Mike’s sister, Abby, sneaks out in search of her animatronic friends: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. As terrifying events begin to unfold, dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s are revealed, unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ picks up one year after the events of the first film and rejoins former security guard Mike and his sister Abby along with new friend Vanessa as Abby is still missing her friends from the terrifying pizzeria. After getting her hands on a walkie-talkie she is reconnected and led to the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza location which was shut down after the murder of a young girl decades prior. As Abby tries to help her friends once again, Mike and Vanessa must head into the heart of danger and uncover the mysteries lurking in the pizzeria if they hope to save Abby.
Directed again by Emma Tammi (Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Wind), from a screenplay written by Scott Cawthon and based upon the game by Cawthon, Tammi does a nice job back at the helm for ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ guiding along the similar sequel with fun and style. The cast of the sequel includes various new and returning stars including Josh Hutchterson (The Beekeeper), Elizabeth Lail (TV’s You), Piper Rubio (TV’s For All Mankind), Wayne Knight (TV’s Bookie), Freddy Carter (American Carnage), Skeet Ulrich (TV’s Riverdale), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), and Matthew Lillard (The Life of Chuck), along with more and most offer capable and fitting performances overall in their roles.
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ is a generally fun, stylish and occasionally dark follow-up that has its share of notable moments and excitement but as a whole doesn’t quite hold up with its slightly above-average predecessor, although does come close for better or worse. It introduces some new animatronic characters to the tale including some fan favorites and tries to expand the story by shifting much of the activity to a different location; the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, although in reality it merely switches one location for a similar one as a way to open the door to revealing the past and a window to easily including the new animatronic stars.
In the department of new animatronic characters this time around there are at least a few noteworthy new inclusions in the way of the Marionette, Mangle and Balloon Boy which each have their own unique attributes paired with fittingly creepy designs. While some are far better utilized than others, fans of the games will surely still enjoy seeing them join the big screen storyline. As expected the sequel once again keeps the idea of the violence dark and prominent but tends to keep the actual visual violence in check, with most deaths occurring offscreen and limited blood on display which is sure to annoy some genre fans but is also anything but surprising considering the source material and the first film’s approach. This sequel may not have a great deal of clever or monumental elements to contribute but it’s still a good deal of fun for those that enjoyed its predecessor or the games it’s based upon and don’t mind what largely amounts to more of the same with a few slight alterations or additions.
Overall, ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ is a decent sequel that returns moviegoers to the world of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza for another outing with the deadly animatronics, taking what was established in the first film and mostly delivering more of the same, with a few new characters both animatronic and otherwise introduced in order to try and help expand upon the world. Fans of the franchise will surely appreciate some of the new animatronic additions this time around such as the Marionette and Mangle and those who enjoyed the previous movie will likely have plenty of fun with this next chapter. If you’re a fan of the franchise as a whole or just the previous film and are interested in the sequel it should be worth the time and price of a rental to check out.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty spectacular as a whole and it provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any significant issues along the way. Detail is rewarding on characters (both real and animatronic) as well as the various locations visited throughout, and the Dolby Vision HDR enhances many tidbits such as colors on characters and clothing, plus more, while black levels are suitably deep, dark and problem free for the most part. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that looks good at pretty much every turn and should please fans along with newcomers.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a blast that perfectly complements the eerie fun and serves up a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It regularly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, action sounds, creepy effects, along with crowd chatter and more repeatedly zipping throughout the various speakers, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never disappoints and repeatedly enhances the onscreen fun and terror throughout.
