Synopsis:
Based on an incredible true story, Mike (Hugh Jackman) and Claire (Kate Hudson) are two down-on-their-luck musicians who prove that it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams. They form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning and Thunder, rising from a humble garage to dive bar gigs to unexpected hometown stardom. When tragedy strikes, their love for each other and passion for music give them the strength to overcome hardships, rediscover hope, and inspire everyone around them.
Based on the true story and the documentary of the same name, ‘Song Sung Blue’ follows struggling musicians Mike and Claire who cross paths and soon discover an undeniable chemistry between them and decide to try and establish success as a “Neil Diamond Experience” band with the name ‘Thunder & Lightning’. Before long what started as a mere dream and a garage band expands in popularity tremendously, sending the pair to play sizeable shows in their home state and even landing gigs opening for huge, well known bands. But when tragedy strikes things take a turn down a bleak path, but there might still be some light at the end to reach if they’re able to keep fighting for it.
Written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) and based on the Documentary by Greg Kohs, Brewer does a decent job at the helm of ‘Song Sung Blue’ guiding along the tale with style and heart, although the script’s struggles and drastically varying tones do affect it at times. The film’s cast includes Hugh Jackman (Deadpool & Wolverine), Kate Hudson (Glass Onion), Michael Imperioli (TV’s The White Lotus), Ella Anderson (TV’s Henry Danger), Mustafa Shakir (Love Hurts), Fisher Stevens (TV’s Succession) and Jim Belushi (Gigi & Nate), with most delivering largely solid and capable performances in each of their roles throughout.
‘Song Sung Blue’ kicks off on a tremendous note and initially shines thanks to a moving, heartfelt story paired with beloved song inclusions and outstanding performances by lead stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, but becomes inconsistent and even a bit sloppy as it progresses due to its struggle to balance the light and the dark moments within the story. After showing such impressive initial promise it goes down a more depressing path and while that alone is understandable it’s the manner in which it seems to jump from one mood and style to another and back again without any real seamless or natural balance; often feeling like two drastically different films that were sloppily edited together and that don’t honor the vibe and flow of each other in a natural way. One moment everything is light and happy, the next it’s dark and depressing, then suddenly reverts yet again and doesn’t stop there.
There are many powerful and moving moments that stand out along the way and the great performances all around do help it to avoid completely crumbling under itself, yet it’s not quite enough to disregard the other troubles within. The sudden repeated shifts in tone also cause some of more painful moments to not adequately come off in the way they seem to be intended. It is worth noting that I haven’t seen the documentary on which it’s based, therefore my critique is based solely on this film itself.
Overall, ‘Song Sung Blue’ tells a powerful true story that’s rich with heart, music and emotion and benefits tremendously from marvelous performances by leads Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as well as a memorable story of two underdogs joining forces and refusing to ignore their dreams. It unfortunately also struggles to maintain a balance and flow throughout as the tone repeatedly shifts drastically to the point where it almost feels like they didn’t know how they wanted the film to come off tonally which causes it to lose its way on multiple occasions, although the terrific performances and heart within help it to avoid entirely falling apart. If you’re a fan of the story or simply the cast and director then ‘Song Sung Blue’ is certainly worth checking out whenever possible as many out there were clearly much fonder of it than I was.

The video presentation looks wonderful and delivers a clean, sharp and richly colored presentation from start to finish that holds up well without any issues or troubles arising along the way. Detail is terrific on character faces and attire, along with the various settings including the packed music halls, along with just about everything else, while colors are delightfully bold and bright and black levels remain sufficiently deep and rich without problems. Overall, this is a fantastic high definition presentation that delivers well at every turn and shouldn’t cause any complaints from fans or newcomers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack is quite good itself and it offers a crisp, clean and immersive audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send the music, along with crowd noise, planes flying overheard and a good bit more moving throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible.
