Synopsis:
The Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher) are back — to unite with a new generation of illusionists (Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt) for their most global, high-stakes magical adventure yet. Their mission: Expose the corruption of Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike), a powerful diamond heiress with ties to arms dealers, traffickers, and warlords. Aided by the legendary Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), the two generations of magicians must overcome their differences to try and defeat their cunning and dangerous adversary, in this magic-fueled heist filled with the franchise’s signature twists, turns, and thrilling reveals — along with some of the most thrilling illusions ever captured on film.
The Horsemen return for another adventure alongside some new stars in ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ which sees the Horsemen appear after ten years when a group of talented, young individuals put on a fake event that catches the attention of the real Horsemen. As the two teams hesitantly join forces, they must learn to work together in order to stop the corruption at the hands of a diamond heiress. But as they enact a huge new heist, it leads to some unexpected surprises, confrontations and reunions that could change the course of their plot for better or worse.
Directed this time around by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Uncharted) from a screenplay written by Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Paul Wernick (Deadpool & Wolverine) & Rhett Reese (Deadpool 2) and Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), from a story by Eric Warren Singer and Michael Lesslie, and based on characters created by Boaz Yakin & Edward Ricourt; Fleischer does a nice job at the helm of ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ guiding along the new entry with plenty of fun, style and charisma. The film’s cast includes Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain), Woody Harrelson (Ella McCay), Dave Franco (Regretting You), Isla Fisher (Jay Kelly), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Dominion), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) and Morgan Freeman (TV’s Lioness), along with more and nearly all offer capable performances in each of their roles.
‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ is a fun, generally solid and still immensely enjoyable follow-up that pairs the Horsemen we all know with some new magical stars for a fresh adventure that may not be quite as great as the previous two installments but still has no trouble at all keeping the fun and excitement coming consistently throughout. With some new faces, plenty of breathtaking new tricks to showcase, it’s like reuniting with old friends even if there may occasionally be a heavy reliance on CGI and a few areas of the story feel mildly forced.
The great news is the key four are back at it, with Isla Fisher returning after her absence in the sequel, and the four main franchise stars still have great chemistry which can help one to ignore some of the other minor flaws or questionable moments which certainly never hurts. Those behind it clearly know that fans want to see more of these characters and aren’t likely to have too many issues with unbelievable or outrageous scenarios considering that’s the other true charm of the franchise. In addition to introducing three new, younger key characters for the previous Horsemen to clash and cooperate with, it also introduces another unlikable villain who it’s quite easy to root against and revel in watching them struggle against this talented team.
Overall, ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ is another flashy, fun and often humorous outing with most of the original cast returning that sends the magical Horsemen on a new adventure after all of these years alongside some fresh new faces who have plenty of unique magical talents themselves. It doesn’t quite manage to reach the same level as the previous two entries in the series but it still has enough twists, turns and thrilling tricks up its sleeve that fans of the previous films will surely want to make a point of checking it out whenever possible. Diehard fans of the series will probably be content to make a blind purchase even if they missed it in theaters but I would encourage any casual viewers to rent it before adding to your collection just in case.
