Almost 20 years after its television debut, Hanna-Barbera brought THE FLINTSTONES back to network television in 1979 with an all-new series entitled THE NEW FRED AND BARNEY SHOW. Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings on NBC, this collection contains all 17 episodes of the “revival” series which captured the essence of what made the original series such an enduring fan favorite. Featuring the voice characterizations of Henry Corden as Fred, Mel Blanc as Barney, Jean VanderPyl as Wilma, and Gay Autterson as Betty, THE NEW FRED AND BARNEY SHOW is cleverly written and is making its official home video debut with this all-new Blu-ray collection.

Your favorite stone-age family returns for more fun in the “revival” series ‘The New Fred and Barney Show’ which joins neighbors and best buddies Fred and Barney as they set out for a new collection of wacky and ridiculous adventures, both on their own and occasionally bringing the entire gang along. The series accompanies Fred and Barney as they get caught up in plenty of troubling situations including dealing with everything from werewolves to vampires and even trying to find a way out of a spooky forest, along with attempting to bulk up when they discover their wives’ obsession with a hunky star and much more, now available to own in its entirety at long last!

‘The New Fred and Barney Show’ looked to capitalize on the ongoing success of ‘The Flintstones’ and made its broadcast debut in 1979, well over a decade after the original series concluded its run. Airing for a total of 17 episodes throughout the year, the series stars the voice talents of Henry Corden making his fulltime debut as Fred, alongside Mel Blanc as Barney, plus Jean VanderPyl as Wilma and Gay Autterson as Betty respectively. It also went back to the general timeline where the original series ended with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm back as kids after showcasing them as teens in  earlier series such as ‘The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show’ and ‘The Flintstone Comedy Hour’ which both debuted in the early 1970s.

‘The New Fred and Barney Show’ does switch things up in many respects from ‘The Flintstones’ not only by focusing far more prominently on Fred and Barney but also by integrating a great deal of supernatural related content into the series, featuring everything from haunted locations to werewolves, vampires and plenty more. It probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that this series doesn’t quite manage to fully replicate the charm and splendor of the original, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great deal of fun in its own right and it repeatedly delivers plenty of goofy fun, laughs and misadventures that fans of the characters will still have a great time with.

Many Flintstones fans will surely be as excited as I am to see this less popular gem finally receive a home video release after all of these years, especially after being largely unavailable for quite some time, although it did become available on the Boomerang streaming service for a moment years prior and long before it was shuttered which is where I first had the pleasure of checking it out. If you’ve never had the opportunity to see this one yourself I would definitely suggest giving it a whirl, just don’t expect a perfect replica of the original series or you may be somewhat disappointed.

It’s definite cause for celebration as ‘The New Fred and Barney Show’ arrives home in stunning high definition in its entirety in the 2-disc ‘The New Fred and Barney Show: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray release from Warner Archive Collection, which also marks the home entertainment debut of the animated series which was never even released on VHS, Laserdisc or DVD over the years so this is a pretty huge deal to say the least.

The Blu-ray release serves up all seventeen episodes of the series in full High Definition, with 1080p masters from 4K scans of the original negatives and every single episode looks utterly stunning in color, detail and quality. These spectacular new HD video presentations are paired with outstanding DTS-HD MA dual mono soundtracks that combined have the entire animated series looking and sounding better than fans ever imagined seeing or hearing it. The set does not include any bonus material but that shouldn’t deter any fans who will absolutely want to make certain to add this one to your collection. If you’re a Flintstones or Hanna-Barbera fan considering a purchase, I can’t recommend this one highly enough.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The New Fred and Barney Show: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation for all 17 episodes of the series, remastered in 1080p HD from 4K scans of the original negatives and utilizing the show’s original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentations look tremendous across the board, providing sharp, clean, colorful and gorgeously detailed presentations on every episode. Detail is wonderful on characters, backgrounds and other scenery which is further enhanced by bright, rich coloring throughout and a mild grain palette. There are a few minor sequences in some episodes that are a bit less defined and sharp, but as a whole every single episode shines. Overall, these are phenomenal high definition presentations that will have fans and newcomers thoroughly thrilled.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release includes a 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for all 17 episodes of the animated series. These dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks are more than capable in their own right and they offer clean, crisp and well balanced soundtracks with no issues or faults to be found along the way. They juggle the various audio elements without any trouble and ensure that all music, dialogue and other audio elements share the channel(s) splendidly without any audio content or dialogue contradicting or negatively affecting any others. Overall, these are solid 2.0 DTS-HD MA dual mono soundtracks that do their job very well and shouldn’t elicit any complaints.
