Synopsis:

While on a weekend getaway at a remote cabin, Liz and Malcolm’s romantic retreat takes a dark turn when a sinister presence unveils the cabin’s chilling past. Driven by arresting performances from Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, the film descends into a relentless spiral of dread.

‘Keeper’ accompanies couple Liz and Malcom as they head out for a quiet, romantic weekend at a cabin owned by Malcom’s family. But as they arrive and begin to settle into the secluded cabin things start off on a positive note before Liz begins to witness strange occurrences as well as the sudden appearance of ghostly individuals without any rhyme or reason to back it up. Intent to try and set it aside and enjoy their time together, things become increasingly unsettling as secrets surrounding the cabin begin to be slowly unveiled and a hidden darkness arises.

Directed by talented filmmaker Osgood Perkins (The Monkey, Longlegs) from a screenplay written by Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals), Perkins does a commendable job at the helm of ‘Keeper’ guiding along the sinister tale with an increasing sense of dread and uncertainty. The film’s cast includes Tatiana Maslany (The Monkey), Rossif Sutherland (TV’s Murder in a Small Town), Birkett Turton (TV’s iZombie), Eden Weiss (Christmas Under the Lights) and a few more who each deliver generally solid performances in their respective roles.

‘Keeper’ is a creepy, tense and increasingly curious tale of one woman’s seeming descent into madness in the midst of a romantic weekend at a cabin with her boyfriend. It does a terrific job of kicking off with an easygoing visit to a cabin and a clear connection between the couple that slowly begins to build an eerie sense of uncertainty once events start to get a little strange. From that point on the film consistently increases the creepiness factor as she begins to lose touch with what’s real and what’s imagined or dreamed, leading her to a psychological clash as she tries to uncover what is occurring and why it’s plaguing her specifically while the man manages to remain entirely unaffected by the haunting-like events.

Before long things begin to slip more off the rails as the terror and visions progress drastically and hints about the reality of their location begin to reveal themselves, leaving the viewer to try and piece together the situation along with our lead until everything is finally uncovered. It’s a film that works quite well with the unique style of filmmaker Osgood Perkins who does a fantastic job of slowly unraveling the truth while keeping us largely in the dark most of the way, and noteworthy performances by Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland contribute splendidly to it all, yet some curious choices and a script that occasionally seems to become lost within itself do hamper the effect on a number of occasions, as does a conclusion that doesn’t quite land or connect as it feels like it should.

Overall, ‘Keeper’ serves up an eerie, uncomfortable and mysterious tale that benefits from plenty of creepy and unsettling moments paired with a sense of dread and uncertainty that permeates throughout the tale and consistently builds throughout before finally revealing the truth behind it all and while much of it works splendidly, a few tidbits and reveals don’t work like they should and do negatively impact the overall viewing experience. Fortunately the great direction and unique filmmaking choices made by director Osgood Perkins paired with terrific performances by leads Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland repeatedly complement the tale and help it to work far better than it might otherwise. If you’re a fan of Perkins or of the key cast then I would definitely encourage giving ‘Keeper’ a whirl and making up your own mind, although I would suggest renting it before making a purchase for anyone who hasn’t already seen it.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Keeper’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks marvelous as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable issues to be located along the way. Detail is fantastic on everything from character specifics and the various interiors of the cabin to the wooded exteriors and everything else, while the HDR improves upon some elements and colors such as clothing and bits of nature and black levels are impressively rich, deep and clean. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers splendidly throughout and should easily satisfy fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and at times noticeably aggressive audio presentation throughout that does a great job of complementing the terror and uncertainty of the tale. It takes advantage of all five available channels on multiple occasions in order to send music, eerie and nature-related effects, along with more overtaking the various speakers whenever fitting, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up without issue and does a great job of enhancing the scares and eerie tone throughout.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Keeper’ offers one notable extra in the way of an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Osgood Perkins’. A ‘Teaser’ (running approximately 1 minute) and ‘Trailer’ (approximately 2 minutes) for the film are also included.
