Synopsis:

“There’s no place like home” is an adage that breezy, affable Wally Gator (voiced by Daws Butler) needs to learn again and again. A true people-person alligator, Wally is driven by his excessive curiosity and his bon vivant inclinations to seek out new experiences beyond the city zoo where he hangs his porkpie hat. Donning a variety of hilarious disguises, Wally escapes the care of dedicated zookeeper Twiddle (voiced by Don Messick) only to end up crying “Oh, fuddle-dee-doo!” as he lands himself in a series of ever more ridiculous (and dangerous!) jams! Whether he’s confused with a dragon by a clan of medievalist monster fighters, almost becoming the final ingredient in a witch’s magic potion or becoming a stunt gator in Hollywood action pictures, Wally is always relieved when he finally makes his way back to Twiddle and the zoo..only to saunter off the very next day! This collection contains all 52 of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved Wally Gator animation adventures, all newly remastered from the best available film elements for this Blu-ray collection.

Prepare for a great deal of zany fun with ‘Wally Gator’ the lovable and trouble-causing alligator who resides at the local zoo under the watchful eye of kindhearted zookeeper Twiddle who just can’t seem to get Wally to stay put. Always intent on escaping the zoo, Wally repeatedly attempts one ludicrous plan after another paired with donning plenty of ridiculous disguises in order to set out upon the town and explore and almost always ending up in more trouble that he could have fathomed, more often than not opting to return home to the comforts of the zoo when things get chaotic. But one way or another, Wally never seems to be content with the caged life and is doomed to live a life of repeated struggles and games where he never quite manages to learn from his experiences.

[Blu-Ray Review] Wally Gator: The Complete Series; Now Available From Warner Archive 3

‘Wally Gator’ debuted as one of three new series in the heyday of Hanna-Barbera and aired during the 1962-63 broadcast season as part of the syndicated ‘The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series’ block alongside fellow toons ‘Touché Turtle and Dum Dum’ (which was released on Blu-ray by Warner Archive in its entirety last October) and ‘Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har’ (which was released on Blu-ray the same date as this Wally Gator Blu-ray from Warner Archive; our review of this one should also be hitting soon) and while all three offer a great deal of goofy fun and humor, I have to say Wally Gator has always been my favorite of the three and is easily the one I’ve seen most often.

It’s an absolute treat to finally have the entire series of ‘Wally Gator’ collected in its entirety and now fellow fans of this beloved animated series can revisit all of the escapes, captures and trouble-attracting goofiness that Wally’s adventures have to offer as he deals with everything from trying to avoid zookeeper Twiddle and his sleepy, yet efficient guard dog, to narrowly escaping the clutches of a hunter intent on ending him, not to mention spurts as a Hollywood star and even being mistaken as a dragon, plus so much more. So grab the snacks and the whole family because it’s time to relax and laugh with Wally Gator.

The Blu-ray release of ‘Wally Gator: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation for all 52 original episodes/cartoons of the series newly remastered from the best available film elements, with its original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentations look spectacular for the most part and the majority of episodes offer clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentations throughout that are rich with vibrant color and absent of any notable issues or glitches. As is often the case with these shows due to the age and attainability of source materials, there are a handful of episodes stemming from lesser sources that are less sharp and retain a degree of video noise throughout; yet most of them look better than fans could have hoped. Overall, these are largely outstanding high definition presentations that should have fans excited.

AUDIO:

These dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtracks are very solid in their own right for the most part and the majority offer clean, crisp and generally impressive audio presentations throughout that do a terrific job of juggling the various audio elements within and ensuring that all dialogue and other audio elements remain clean and fully audible. As with the video presentations there are a few episodes where the quality is slightly less impressive, yet never causing any issues or problems with clarity as a result.
