Synopsis:

Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg’s action-packed foretelling vision of the future stars Tom Cruise as Precrime detective John Anderton. When he is “identified” as a future murderer, John must race against his own specialized police department and time itself to prove his innocence of a crime he has yet to commit. Visually stunning and packed with relentless action, it is a cerebral, high-octane ride through a future where free will is under surveillance—and nothing is as it seems.

‘Minority Report’ joins Pre-crime detective John Anderton in the year 2054 where murder has largely become a thing of the past thanks to the invention of the Pre-crime department which is able to uncover murder plots and plans before they occur with the help of three precogs who are able to see the events before they actually happen. But when Anderton becomes the next target himself, he must try and escape the clutches of his team in order to find proof that he has been framed, but staying hidden in a world where every camera on every corner and doorway is tracking you proves anything but easy.

‘Minority Report’ was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg who does a fantastic job guiding along the smart and stylish sci-fi thriller from a screenplay by Scott Frank and Jon Cohen which was based upon a short story by Philip K. Dick. The film’s noteworthy cast includes Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Steve Harris, Neal McDonough, Jessica Capshaw, Patrick Kilpatrick, Peter Stormare and Max von Sydow who each offer solid and capable performances in their respective roles.

‘Minority Report’ was first unleashed upon moviegoers in the summer of 2002 and I can still clearly remember catching this one in theaters and being absolutely floored by the stunning visuals, solid performances and a marvelously crafted, complex mystery that all comes together into something truly special that still holds up in just about every conceivable way today, more than twenty years after it first hit theatre screens. Loaded with tension, style and breathtaking visuals that repeatedly complement the dazzling action sequences throughout, ‘Minority Report’ is not only a great ride but a powerful film that showcases the humanity of the characters amid a world where technology reigns.

If you tend to enjoy a marvelous and intricate futuristic sci-fi thriller or are a fan of filmmaker Steven Spielberg and star Tom Cruise but have never previously had the pleasure of ‘Minority Report’ then I would strongly encourage going out of your way to rectify that as this is one unforgettable and beautifully crafted ride that is not to be missed and still delivers splendidly after all of these years.

Steven Spielberg’s 2002 sci-fi thriller ‘Minority Report’ lands on 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever in the US and Canada courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. The release delivers the feature film in spectacular full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 from a new transfer reviewed and approved by Spielberg that has this dazzling futuristic ride looking better than ever. The new UHD video presentation is capably complemented by a multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that appears to be identical to the one included on the previous Blu-ray edition but still holds up remarkably well and shouldn’t elicit too many complaints even if many fans were likely hoping for an Atmos upgrade, and together the film looks and sounds pretty magnificent to say the least.

While the great video and audio quality offered on the 4K UHD disc are incredibly solid alone, the release also includes a bonus Blu-ray disc entirely dedicated to supplements which is absolutely jam-packed with numerous previously released extras that should keep you busy for a good minute. The 4K debut of ‘Minority Report’ is available both in standard 4K UHD packaging (which is the version that was sent over for review this time) and in collectible Steelbook packaging offering fans an additional choice of which version they’d prefer to have in their collection. Fans should be very excited about this great 4K UHD release and if you’re a fan of the film and/or of Spielberg and Cruise that’s been hoping to see this one upgraded it’s highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Minority Report’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, from a new transfer reviewed and approved by Steven Spielberg and presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty outstanding as a whole and it delivers a clean, sharp, filmic and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any noteworthy issues to be located throughout. Detail is tremendous on character specifics along with the various futuristic environments and locations both interior and exterior, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers more lifelike coloring on some elements throughout such as vehicles, clothing and more; with deep, problem free black levels to nicely top it all off. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers marvelously at every turn and should easily thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack may mildly disappoint some who were hoping to see such a lively and active film get an upgrade to Atmos in the audio department, yet fortunately this multichannel DTS-HD MA soundtrack still sounds pretty stellar and holds up remarkably well throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, vehicle and action effects, plus a great deal more frequently zipping throughout the various speakers, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that nicely complements the fun and excitement and shouldn’t disappoint.
