‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ tells the story of two strangers living in the same city who find their lives connected thanks to a strange rental car company that saves the day in a desperate situation. After finding his car booted, David happens upon an odd rental car company offering two decades old options and makes a wedding ceremony as a result where he meets Sarah who also happened to rent from the same strange company. As the two happen to cross paths again after the ceremony at a fast food restaurant and Sarah’s car dies as they try to depart, she catches a ride with David. What neither expected was that this would begin a strange and cosmic journey that will force them to reflect on their lives, with the potential to change everything.

Directed by Kogonada (After Yang, TV’s The Acolyte) from a screenplay written by Seth Reiss (The Menu), Kogonada does a nice job at the helm of ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ guiding along the offbeat, yet touching and gorgeous journey with humor, heart and style. The film’s cast includes Margot Robbie (Barbie), Colin Farrell (The Batman), Kevin Kline (The Good House) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), along with more and each offer capable and fitting performances for the most part in their respective roles.

[Blu-Ray Review] A Big Bold Beautiful Journey; Available December 23 From Sony 2

‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ is a heartwarming, fantastical and humorous look at two strangers who cross paths and soon discover that their meeting was anything but a mere happenstance as they are taken on a journey through time and memory in order to revisit key moments in their life with the intention of uncovering things about themselves that could help them evolve in their existence. It’s a truly beautiful film that will surely elicit some pleasant feelings, frequent smiles and even a few good laughs, but its potential to be something spectacular is bogged down by a story that’s a bit too out there, confusing and jumbled at times which clashes with its strengths and honorable intentions.

It’s filled with bright, vibrant colors throughout and some strange twists and turns that work far better at times than they do at others, and the odd, curious and at times blatantly illogical choices hamper the beauty and hope throughout, especially if you try too hard to get to the bottom of its meaning or purpose. If you can merely let go and appreciate the ride for the strange and peculiar adventure that it is though, then you’ll probably enjoy it quite a bit for the most part. The dedicated guidance of director Kogonada paired with the rewarding performances by leads Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell do help it to hold up more than it might otherwise and there is a great deal within to appreciate and enjoy.

[Blu-Ray Review] A Big Bold Beautiful Journey; Available December 23 From Sony 3

Overall, ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ is a touching, gorgeously crafted and fantasy-like tale of two strangers on a journey to find themselves and possibly each other, yet it suffers from the odd and at times even confusing choices it makes and just how far out there it gets. Fortunately the passionate guidance of director Kogonada and the emotional performances by Robbie and Farrell help it to steer closer to the right track. It unfortunately does become lost in its extravagance a bit too often to ignore, but at the same time is a beautiful and heartwarming ride in its own right with plenty of rewarding tidbits that prevent it from ever becoming truly bad. If you’re a fan of the director, key cast or you simply appreciate a tale of love, hope and beauty albeit one that’s a bit off-balance then ‘A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’ is recommended and should be worth the time and price of a rental to give a whirl.
