Synopsis:
From the highly anticipated adaptation of master storyteller Stephen King’s first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, the visionary director of The Hunger Games franchise films (Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Pts. 1 & 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), comes THE LONG WALK, an intense, chilling, and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: how far could you go?
PLEASE NOTE: This review pertains to the standard 4K UHD combo pack edition which will be released on December 23; a separate Amazon Exclusive 4K UHD Steelbook release is also available now.
‘The Long Walk’ tells the intense tale of a dystopian version of our world where fifty young men are selected via a lottery to participate in a recurring country-wide event called The Long Walk where there is one winner and no finish line. As the walk goes on and the first losers aka victims are removed from the competition, two young men named Raymond and Peter begin to form a connection that will help power them through some of the roughest moments to come. But even with the new bonds and friendships formed, there can only be one winner and who will be the final man walking is anyone’s guess.
Directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Constantine) from a screenplay written by JT Mollner (Strange Darling) which was based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, Lawrence does a fantastic job at the helm of ‘The Long Walk’ guiding along the brutal, tense and heartfelt tale with style and care. The film’s cast includes Cooper Hoffman (Saturday Night), David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Garrett Wareing (TV’s Manifest), Tut Nyuot (Steve), Charlie Plummer (Moonfall), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit), Jordan Gonzalez (TV’s Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), Joshua Odjick (TV’s IT: Welcome to Derry), Josh Hamilton (Maestro), Judy Greer (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever) and Mark Hamill (The Life of Chuck), with nearly all delivering capable and in many cases noteworthy performances in their roles.
‘The Long Walk’ is a tense, often bleak and occasionally quite beautiful tale of a dark version of the world and fifty young men that must compete in a deadly competition where only one will survive. It does a tremendous job of allowing the viewer to become acquainted with many of the characters within and it doesn’t take long to like or dislike many characters once we begin to get a better idea of their personal traits and attitudes, only making it hit that much harder as they are systematically eliminated along the way. It’s a Stephen King adaptation that has been attempted or plotted multiple times but had never seen the light of day until now, and it’s easy to see why considering the challenges of shooting a film that almost never stops moving or sits still and it’s impressive just how capably they managed to make that factor work and not look tacky.
Director Francis Lawrence does a tremendous job in the director’s chair guiding along the unnerving ride and his work is repeatedly complemented by a solid cast led by Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson, not to mention a standout performance from Mark Hamill who often steals the show with his eerily cold and expressionless portrayal of the intimidating Major. It’s a brutal film that doesn’t pull its punches and the brutality, tension and bloodshed is randomly balanced by an immense amount of heart and humanity, helping to make this one evolve into something special that will have you glued to the screen from the starting gunshot of the walk to the unnerving and unforgettable conclusion.
Overall, ‘The Long Walk’ delivers a brutal, intense and often surprisingly beautiful and heartfelt look at a group of young men who must participate in a terrifying and grueling event where only one of them can win, not to mention survive. It does a terrific job of bringing the story to life and introducing you to characters you quickly fall in love with (or in a few circumstances perhaps even despise) and then takes you along for the painfully tense and bloody journey they must try to endure. While ‘The Long Walk’ will likely be a bit too bleak and brutal for some, for those that are already intrigued, fans of Stephen King’s work or fans of the book itself I highly recommend giving this one a shot. At the very least it should easily prove worthy of your time and the price of a rental and many will probably also want to purchase a copy not long after watching.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Long Walk’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and it provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any unexpected issues arising throughout. Detail is great on characters, scenery and most everything else, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers some minor tweaks improving colors on elements of clothing and landscapes, with rich, deep and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that looks good at every turn and should please fans.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a clean, crisp and at times pretty aggressive audio presentation throughout that retains frequent immersion to some degree due to nearly the entire film occurring outdoors. It utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, chatter, gunshots, weather elements, wind blowing and more throughout the various speakers, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that may not provide a whirlwind of constant aggressive activity but is almost always somewhat immersive and active and never disappoints in the slightest.
