‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ rejoins paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they tackle the case so chilling that it ended their careers. The new chapter initially joins the couple in the mid 1960’s as they take on a case involving a cursed mirror prior to the birth of their daughter, then rejoins them more than twenty years later as they are drawn to a struggling family suffering from horrifying attacks after becoming the unfortunate new owners of the same mirror. With unsettling visions and further concern for Ed’s heart troubles, the couple initially try their best to refuse the case, but soon become uncertain as to whether they can stay away when one tragic event after another results.

Directed once again by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II), from a screenplay written by Ian Goldberg (TV’s Fear the Walking Dead) & Richard Naing (Eli) and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2), from a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan, Chaves does a capable job back at the helm for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ guiding along the story with chills, style and even a bit of heart. The film’s cast includes Vera Farmiga (The Many Saints of Newark), Patrick Wilson (Insidious), Mia Tomlinson (TV’s The Lost Pirate Kingdom), Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody), Steve Coulter (Oppenheimer), Rebecca Calder (TV’s House of the Dragon), Elliot Cowan (TV’s Foundation) and more, with most offering largely capable and solid performances in their roles.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ is a largely solid, fun and eerie chapter in the saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren that delivers plenty of fun twists, jump scares and connections to their personal lives that causes more uncertainty throughout. It’s still not quite as tremendous as the first two installments that were helmed by James Wan, although it is a step up from the previous entry and benefits from a more tightknit plot and creepy moments, yet you could also argue that they rely on the jump scares a tad too much. Even so, many horror fans and fans of the series probably won’t hold that against them too much as it certainly fits with the story for the most part.

The ever-rewarding performances by Wilson and Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine shine as always and a case that hits closer to home for the family than we’ve seen prior helps to keep you engaged as well as raising the stakes in a more personal manner which all helps this one to keep you more curious and locked in at times. The atmosphere is suitably dark and gloomy and the film itself looks terrific visually, offering a capable final chapter in the saga (or at the very least the expected final one featuring Wilson and Farmiga as the Warrens) that should at the absolute least have little trouble keeping fans intrigued.

Overall, ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ delivers another creepy, tense and immensely entertaining outing in the lives of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that sees the terror hit closer to home for them than ever before, putting themselves as well as their now grown daughter and fiancé directly in the middle of the chilling case. ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ may not manage to deliver a follow-up that’s as outstanding as the first two installments in the series yet it is at least a definite improvement over the mildly underwhelming third movie and this new chapter is definitely recommended for fans of the series and the franchise as a whole. It should be well worth taking the time to check out for fans as well as the price of a rental for those not necessarily interested in owning it.
