Synopsis:

Jordan Peele and Monkeypaw Productions present a chilling journey into the dark side of the pursuit of excellence at any cost. Attacked by an unhinged fan, quarterback Cameron Cade receives a lifeline when his football idol Isaiah White offers to train him. But as Isaiah’s charisma curdles into something sinister, Cam descends a disorienting spiral that may cost him more than he bargained for.

‘Him’ tells the story of aspiring ball player Cameron Cade who after a brutal attack is invited to train with the greatest player in the game and his personal idol Isaiah White in order to ensure that he’s capable of what’s needed if signed. Fully willing to do whatever is necessary to see his goal of being the next GOAT come to fruition, Cade promptly accepts. As he arrives at White’s compound to begin the week, things slowly go from a bit odd and extreme to increasingly nuts and dangerous. Uncertain about the increasingly odd chain of events in addition to the strange visions he seems to be suffering from, Cade dives fully into White’s world and puts it all on the line, but a more sinister purpose for his invitation seems to be lurking behind the scenes.

Directed by Justin Tipping (Kicks, TV’s The Chi) from a screenplay written by Skip Bronkie & Zack Akers (TV’s Limetown) and Tipping, Tipping does a capable job at the helm of ‘Him’ guiding along the curious and psychologically heavy tale with a fittingly offbeat style and tone. The film’s cast includes Marlon Wayans (Air), Tyriq Withers (I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Tim Heidecker (Y2K), Jim Jefferies (TV’s Legit) and more, with the majority offering mostly solid or at least capable performances in each of their respective roles.

‘Him’ is an intriguing take on the world of football that begins with plenty of promise including a capable cast and a hauntingly ominous vibe permeating throughout and only sees the promise of something more sinister growing as events become increasingly more uncertain and eerie. It’s a well-made film in most respects that does a tremendous job of creating a haunting and uncertain atmosphere and characters whose intentions are clearly not laid out on the table from the onset become increasingly more questionable and dark as the story begins to flesh itself out. Much of it though seems to sadly become lost in the overall scheme of things and the perhaps too blatant and slightly ridiculous conclusion that detracts from most of what leads up to it.

While I certainly won’t delve into spoilers, I will say that the ending is far more direct and in your face than you might anticipate throughout and it feels too stretched from reality to the degree that it makes the whole ordeal a bit difficult to swallow, even for a horror film. Fortunately even with a conclusion that seems to be too much and a little too unbelievable even within the film itself, the solid guidance of director Justin Tipping and some great performances (most notably by Wayans) along with the beautiful shots, increasing sense of looming darkness and the other strengths throughout still help it to balance into an at least average film. Even so it’s hard not to think just how much better it all would have landed if they had been a little less direct or over the top with how the pieces are eventually connected.

Overall, ‘Him’ is a unique horror film that tries to inject some terror and unease into the world of football and largely succeeds in many ways by offering a creepy, ominous and increasing sense of dread and unease throughout paired with the solid guidance of director Justin Tipping and a great cast led by Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, but largely falls apart in the final third due to a conclusion that’s a bit too unbelievable and over the top. The film doesn’t land in every way intended and it certainly has some issues, but it also has plenty of rewarding elements in its favor and ‘Him’ is recommended for anyone that’s already intrigued by the premise who should give it a whirl and make up their own mind. If you haven’t yet seen the film though I would encourage renting it or trying to check it out on streaming as opposed to making a blind purchase to be safe.

Detail is spectacular throughout and everything from character specifics to the almost psychedelic dream sequences and the various haunting areas of the compound stand out in the best way possible, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers some more accurate and fine-tuned colors noticeable on pieces of clothing, backgrounds and more, and it’s all nicely boosted by deep, rich and seemingly endless black levels and shadowing.
