Synopsis:

This iconic Emmy – and Golden Globe -winning semi-improvised comedy series stars creator Larry David as an over-the-top, self-absorbed version of himself who finds endless ways to make a mess of his pretty, pretty good life. Offering a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the writer/producer/comedian’s fictionalized world and friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm follows Larry’s awkward everyday encounters, social missteps and knack for turning mundane situations into chaotic disasters, often leading to hilariously uncomfortable situations.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ joins Larry David (playing an over-exaggerated version of himself) as he goes about his everyday life in Los Angeles (with occasional seasons focusing on visits elsewhere) and repeatedly ends up in awkward situations as a result of being unable to let anything go or keep his mouth shut when needed. Often intent that his personal opinions and belief of the way others should act in any situation ends up with Larry commenting in an offensive, troublesome or just flat out inappropriate manner on everyday events and interactions which typically lead to plenty of turmoil and conflict when it comes back to him in one form or another, yet always with hilariously uncomfortable results.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ was created for television by Larry David who also stars as the series lead throughout all twelve seasons portraying a fictionalized version of himself. The series also stars Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, and Susie Essman, along with J.B. Smoove who joins partway through the show. Numerous notable guest stars and recurring appearances are also made by many key celebrities like Ted Danson, Richard Lewis, along with the cast of Seinfeld, Mel Brooks and many more and everyone plays a big part in making this wildly fun and eccentric comedy series consistently work as brilliantly as it does.

Running for an impressive 12 seasons over the course of 24 years, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ first debuted as a one off hour-long special on HBO in October of 1999 which led to the special being reworked into an ongoing series of its own which debuted for its regular run on October of 2000 and eventually concluding its 12 season run in April of 2024; with a multi-year hiatus occurring in-between seasons 8 and 9. Easily one of the most hilarious and addictive shows that I’ve ever had the pleasure of, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is truly comedy gold and every season offers a plethora of ridiculous fun and so many laughs you might have to take a break when binging just to catch your breath.

The series also stands out for the countless big stars that appeared on it throughout its run, more often than not as versions of themselves much like Larry and again always leading to plenty of hilarity and awkward interactions with David. Just some of the noteworthy stars that have appeared include Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Mel Brooks, Michael J. Fox, Mary Steenburgen, Martin Scorsese, Lucy Liu, Ben Stiller, Rob Reiner, Christian Slater, George Lopez, Lin-Manuel Miranda, F. Murray Abraham and the primary cast of Seinfeld: Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards, plus far too many more to list off here.

All twelve seasons of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ arrive home together on Blu-ray for the first time in the 24-disc ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Series’ set from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. The complete series set on Blu-ray features all 120 episodes (or 121 if you count the initial special which is featured as an extra on the first season yet not in HD) in full high definition, although sadly the results are extremely mixed. Seasons 1-6 which were shot in full screen and standard definition are featured with heavily cropped and I’m sorry to say somewhat poorly upscaled widescreen presentations that are quite disappointing, while Seasons 7-12 which were shot in HD look pretty magnificent and hold up splendidly. The packaging and some early announcements may have noted that the set featured Dolby Digital lossy audio, yet fans will be thrilled to discover that the video presentations are actually paired with DTS-HD MA soundtracks for all twelve seasons; with 1-6 featuring 2.0 DTS-HD soundtracks while 7-12 feature 5.1 DTS-HD audio presentations.

The release also features plenty of previously released extras spread throughout the seasons and the set comes home with two DVD-sized Epik-Pak cases within a side-slip box. While the bigger packaging is known to disappoint many due to the awkward size that doesn’t align with most Blu-ray packaging, fans should at least be pleased to know that while the discs overlap in each spot, there are fortunately no double or triple stacked discs. If you’re a fan of the series that would love to own it on Blu-ray it’s worth adding to your collection, especially if you’re okay with the remastered and cropped presentations for the first six seasons, while those who are more bothered by that factor will have to decide whether it’s worth the purchase for them personally.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Series’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of all twelve seasons. The video presentations are a very mixed bag when it comes to quality. The first six seasons honestly look pretty lackluster due to not only the SD sources seemingly being poorly upscaled to HD with an altered framerate as well as being cropped to widescreen instead of being presented in their original 1.33 aspect ratios like the DVD release. Sadly this means the first six seasons look okay but fans will notice issues such as a somewhat jumpy presentation at times and many very odd looking shots that see obvious chunks of the picture absent due to the cropping in order to reformat to 16×9. Seasons 7-12 on the other hand look pretty fantastic and the HD shot episodes show a massive improvement both in style, quality and smoothness, with richly detailed and clean, crisp and colorful presentations that look marvelous, while seasons 9-12 look particularly outstanding. For a better idea of the differences the first four screencaps are from the initial six seasons while the final four are from the final six seasons. Overall, these high definition presentations are fairly disappointing for seasons 1-6 while seasons 7-12 look fantastic.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for every episode of seasons 1-6 and a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for each episode in seasons 7-12. These lossless soundtracks hold up much better across the board, with the first six seasons using the original audio format and sounding far better as a result, while the final six seasons sound even better. The multichannel soundtracks for seasons 7-12 don’t get overly immersive (as should be expected for a dialogue heavy series of this sort) but do take advantage of the surround elements for music and other tidbits, while all twelve seasons have crisp, clean dialogue and never allow any simultaneously occurring audio elements to clash with one another or elicit any issues to be uncovered. Overall, these are solid 2.0 and 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that hold nicely and shouldn’t have any trouble pleasing fans.

The Blu-ray release of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Series’ features numerous previously released extras that are spread throughout the seasons. I’ve broken down the bonus content by season below for simplicity and easier navigation.

Season 1 features the original ‘HBO Special – Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm’ (running 59 minutes in length) that started it all.

Season 3 includes ‘Stop and Chat with the Cast’ (running approximately 22 minutes).

Season 5 features ‘The History: So Far’ (running approximately 29 minutes) and ‘The History: Even Further’ (approximately 24 minutes).

Season 6 includes ‘On the Set’ (approximately 11 minutes), ‘Outtakes’ (5 minutes) and ‘A Conversation with Larry David’ (23 minutes).

Season 7 includes ‘A Seinfeld Reunion’ (8 minutes), ‘Rebuilding the Seinfeld Sets’ (11 minutes), ‘Larry David as George Costanza’ (3 minutes) and ‘A Seinfeld Moment’ (8 minutes).

Season 8 features ‘The 92^nd Street Y Conversation’ (88 minutes) and ‘Leo’s Guide to NYC’ (9 minutes).

Season 9 includes ‘Memorable Moments’ with Susie (2 minutes), with Larry (2 minutes) and with Jeff (2 minutes).

Season 10 features ‘What Finally Got Them’ (1 minute).

Season 12 includes ‘Leon’s Bungalow Tour’ (2 minutes), ‘On Set with Susie’ (30 seconds), ‘Last Day on Set: Speeches’ (1 minute), ‘Last Day on Set: Gifts’ (1 minute), ‘Last Day on Set’ (3 minutes), plus ‘First and Last Scenes’ (1 minute), ‘Larry’s Favorite Episodes’ (3 minutes) and ‘Larry-isms’ (2 minutes).
