Synopsis:
When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze (Dinklage), is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.
‘The Toxic Avenger’ tells the story of struggling janitor and single step-dad Winston whose life is thrown into further chaos when he discovers that he’s suffering from a disease with less than a year expected to live. After trying to approach the man in charge of the massive company that he works for only to be treated with kindness and insulted and disregarded right after, Winston takes matters into his own hands only to end up being shot and dumped in a pool of toxic waste. Soon after he recovers with new abilities and a shocking new look and decides to use his newfound powers to get some vengeance and help the little people suffering in the polluted town.
Directed by Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) from a screenplay also written by Blair and based on Lloyd Kaufman’s ‘The Toxic Avenger’, Blair does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘The Toxic Avenger Unrated’ guiding along the new take with a rewardingly goofy and gory style that works quite well. The film’s cast includes Peter Dinklage (Roofman), Jacob Tremblay (The Life of Chuck), Taylour Paige (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Julia Davis (TV’s Gavin & Stacey), Jonny Coyne (The Family Plan), Elijah Wood (The Monkey) and Kevin Bacon (MaXXXine) who each offer generally solid and fitting performances in their respective roles.
Macon Blair’s new take on ‘The Toxic Avenger’ delivers a wildly goofy, gory and amusing ride into the creation and rise of a very different type of hero. It’s filled with plenty of gory, bloody violence, twisted humor and perhaps most surprising of all; quite a bit of heart. Utilizing bright, vivid colors throughout and a goofy style that’s very much in line with Troma’s typical offerings, then throwing in a collection of talented actors a fairly modest budget in order to deliver what largely amounts to a Blockbuster B-Movie and it works far better than it has any right to.
The film does alter quite a bit from the original but never in a negative way, instead offering an updated version with some different characters and a different overall story that still frequently honors the original in many respects and is never hesitant to go entirely over the top with the blood drenched violence and frequently hilarious dark humor; ending up with a hybrid of b-movie and goofy horror-comedy with a modest budget and the end result is a ridiculous amount of fun and genre and Troma fans should have a blast for the most part, while those less fond of the studio’s b-movie style might also find themselves pleasantly surprised.
Overall, ‘The Toxic Avenger Unrated’ delivers a splendidly silly and gory, over the top good time that repeatedly honors the original Troma film that it’s based on while at the same time forming into a take that’s very much its own. Nicely guided along by director Macon Blair and with a terrific cast led by Peter Dinklage to back it up, it’s a wildly fun and delightfully ridiculous ride that’s a blast from start to finish and never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. ‘The Toxic Avenger’ certainly won’t be a film that’s for everyone, but for Troma fans and those who enjoyed the original movie as well as those that are fond of goofy and gory horror comedies that aren’t afraid to go all out it’s highly recommended and well worth taking the time to check out whenever possible.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Toxic Avenger Unrated’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole and it offers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any noteworthy issues to be uncovered along the way. Detail is great on characters, backgrounds and bloodshed, while the HDR provides more vibrant and lifelike coloring on various tidbits throughout this already very bright, colorful film, with capable and sufficiently deep, rich black levels to back it up. Overall, this is a solid Ultra High Definition presentation that should excite fans as well as first time viewers.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack provides a clean, crisp and fairly aggressive audio presentation throughout that nicely complements the goofy, gory fun. It consistently utilizes all five available channels in order to send music, vehicle and action effects, some crowd noise and more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible at all times. Overall, this is a very nice 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that repeatedly complements the wild and humorous fun throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.
