[Blu-Ray Review] Smurfs; Available October 28, 2025 From Paramount 1

‘Smurfs’ follows the heroic efforts of No Name Smurf and Smurfette as they must lead a rescue mission into unfamiliar territory and worlds after their beloved Papa Smurf is kidnapped by the evil wizard Razamel in an attempt to locate a missing book that could unlock his true power. As No Name Smurf struggles to find his place within the Smurf community and a name to carry forward, their journey to another world soon leads to the discovery of more groups of Smurfs and even some hidden revelations of their legacy that they will have to confront while trying to save the day and those they care about.

Directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots) from a screenplay written by Pam Brady (Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken) and based on the characters and works of Peyo, Miller does a decent job at the helm of ‘Smurfs’ guiding along the new tale with a few spurts of cleverness and some solid animation. The film’s notable voice cast includes Rihanna (Ocean’s Eight), James Corden (Trolls World Tour), Nick Offerman (Sing 2), JP Karliak (TV’s X-Men ’97), Daniel Levy (Haunted Mansion 2023), Amy Sedaris (TV’s BoJack Horseman), Natasha Lyonne (The Bad Guys 2), Sandra Oh (Turning Red), Jimmy Kimmel (The Boss Baby: Family Business), Octavia Spencer (Onward), Nick Kroll (TV’s Big Mouth), Hannah Waddingham (The Garfield Movie), Alex Winter (Bill & Ted Face the Music), Kurt Russell (The Christmas Chronicles) and John Goodman (TV’s Monsters at Work), with most offering amusing and fitting performances for the most part in their roles.

[Blu-Ray Review] Smurfs; Available October 28, 2025 From Paramount 2

‘Smurfs’ brings your favorite little blue stars back in an animated film that offers a very mixed bag of results. It has plenty of hints of cleverness that peek through along the way including some amusing new characters, a collection of different worlds that they travel between (although this also serves a questionable point that doesn’t always make sense) and some humorous moments that occasionally are quite funny but at other times are painfully bad and don’t land as intended. In a curious move it also sidelines many of the key characters for much of the tale, with the key star of the film being No Name Smurf who is accompanied on his journey most of the way by Smurfette who is basically the voice of hope and encouragement there to nudge him along and occasionally assist when needed.

It’s a familiar yet also very different type of Smurfs tale than the films and series that most of us are accustomed to which is a treat on occasion but far too often than not disappoints and somehow frequently manages to be even less clever and more disappointing than some of the other adaptations. The younger audiences may have more fun with this one than adults due to the issues and various baffling choices arising throughout, yet that doesn’t necessarily mean that those who grew up with the characters won’t find a handful of moments and nods to appreciate along the way as well as a pretty stellar voice cast that helps to slightly enhance the fun much of the time.

[Blu-Ray Review] Smurfs; Available October 28, 2025 From Paramount 3

Overall, ‘Smurfs’ is a fairly average new animated feature with the iconic characters that struggles to find a way to make the tale really click and work, yet does have its share of fun, occasionally quite clever moments and a handful of laughs to offer, along with some nice, colorful animation and a great voice cast of talented stars to assist in propelling it along. Unfortunately it still manages to fall flat a bit too often and ends up offering an altogether mediocre animated feature that isn’t terrible but also isn’t very good. If you’re a dedicated fan of the property or of the notable voice cast within then ‘Smurfs’ might be worth giving a whirl, and doubly so if you have young ones that are interested in the film. I would strongly encourage renting the movie or checking it out on streaming prior to purchasing a copy just to be safe if you haven’t yet seen it.

The Blu-ray release of ‘Smurfs’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole and delivers a clean, smooth and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable issues to be uncovered along the way. Detail is solid across the board and everything from the animated characters and surroundings to the real-world scenery and tidbits shine, with bright, vibrant colors on display more often than not and capably deep, problem free black levels. Overall, this is a very nice High Definition presentation that shouldn’t have any trouble pleasing fans or newcomers.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack nicely complements the onscreen fun and silliness and it provides a clean, crisp and fairly aggressive audio presentation throughout. It frequently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, action and world-travelling effects, plus crowd noise and quite a bit more repeatedly zipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never causing clashes or complications with any dialogue or other audio elements occurring along the way.
