Synopsis:
Michael Caine gives a standout performance as vicious London gangster Jack Carter in this landmark crime classic from director Mike Hodges. The story begins as Carter travels to Newcastle for his brother’s funeral, where he begins to suspect that his brother’s death was not an accident and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit, cover-ups and backhanders through Newcastle’s underworld, leading, he hopes, to the man who ordered his brother killed. Because of his ruthlessness Carter exhibits all the unstopability of the android in Terminator, or Walker in Point Blank, and he and the other characters in the film are prone to sudden, brutal acts of violence. This timeless classic has been remastered from 4K scans of the original negative, with plentiful special features.
‘Get Carter’ follows Jack Carter, a London Gangster who returns to his hometown after his brother dies supposedly by accident. Upon arriving home to attend the funeral, Jack quickly begins to suspect that his brother’s death was murder and not a mere accident. Intent to uncover the truth behind his killing and enact vengeance on those responsible, Jack sets out on a one man mission to uncover the plethora of lies and deceit that seem to arise with every new tidbit of fact revealed, leading Jack to the conclusion that he’s indeed on the right track.
‘Get Carter’ was written for the screen and directed by Mike Hodges and based on the novel “Jack’s Return Home” by Ted Lewis, and Hodges does a tremendous job at the helm smoothly guiding along the gritty and unforgettable crime thriller. The film’s cast includes Michael Caine, Ian Hendry, Britt Ekland and more, with nearly all offering solid and fully capable performances in each of their respective roles that help this tense and realistic crime thriller to work so smoothly and hit as hard as it does.
‘Get Carter’ was initially released in 1971 and was arguably well ahead of its time, and the film still packs quite a punch today more than fifty years later, delivering a gritty, powerful and at times even somewhat shocking ride into one criminal’s quest for vengeance after his brother is killed. Not only does it show a side of British gangsters that was uncommon at that point, but it allows you to care about Carter, even as he commits one unspeakable act after another in his search for revenge.
It’s a film that builds the tension throughout as one fact after another is unveiled, eventually delving into some rather grimy places and subjects that only help to justify Carter’s mission and make those he’s after appear increasingly deplorable; with an unforgettable and hard hitting performance by the legendary Michael Caine who shines throughout. If you’ve never had the pleasure of this one but enjoy a great crime-thriller with a well-constructed story and some notable performances, then it’s probably a great time to rectify that, especially now that it’s finally available in stunning 4K UHD in the states thanks to Warner Archive.
The iconic 1970’s crime-thriller ‘Get Carter’ arrives home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time in the states courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection which also includes a Blu-ray copy. The new UHD release features a spectacular full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 presented here as meticulously restored and remastered in 2022 by the British Film Institute and looking quite tremendous. It’s all further complemented by a rewarding collection of bonus content including Audio Commentaries, Interviews and plenty more that make Warner Archive’s release the definitive release of the film, at least here in the states. VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Get Carter’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented here as meticulously restored and remastered in 2022 by the British Film Institute, with its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks magnificent as a whole and offers a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that delivers beautifully from start to finish without suffering from any unexpected issues to be located throughout. Detail is wonderful on characters, settings and everything else which also sees a notable grain structure that helps to retain the filmic appearance. The Dolby Vision HDR offers more realistic coloring on many elements throughout such as scenery and clothing, while black levels remain sufficiently deep and problem free. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that should have fans of this beloved film absolutely thrilled.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless mono soundtrack provides a crisp, clean and well balanced soundtrack throughout that is a bit on the quiet side and required me to up the volume on my receiver a fair bit beyond the standard mark, but once you get the volume level appropriately aligned it delivers nicely throughout. It does a capable job of ensuring that all of the dialogue, music, action effects and everything else share the channel without any conflictions arising and that each element remains clean and fully audible throughout. Overall, this is a solid 2.0 dual mono DTS-HD MA soundtrack that doesn’t necessarily stand out or get wildly aggressive but holds up without issue in every way required of it and shouldn’t disappoint fans.
