Synopsis:
Your killer bestie is back! When an autonomous android built as the ultimate weapon threatens her beloved Cady, M3GAN convinces her creator, Gemma, to give her a glow-up that makes the original A.I. diva even deadlier. Armed with wild new upgrades and her same iconic attitude, M3GAN claps back against the wannabe techno-terror in a fierce faceoff to crown the baddest bot built for maximum mayhem.
That deadly robotic bestie is back and ready for round two in ‘M3GAN 2.0’ which sees Gemma and her niece Cady finally settling back into a relatively normal life a couple years after escaping M3GAN’s deadly rampage. But when Gemma’s technology used to create the robot manages to fall into the wrong hands it leads to the creation of a new and possibly even more deadly robotic killer dubbed Emilia who is intent to eradicate the world, she is forced to accept help from the dangerous M3GAN. Hesitant to put her trust in the deadly AI after the terrifying events that occurred, Gemma has little choice once she is blamed for the new creation, leading her and her colleagues to create a new body for M3GAN who just might be their one hope of stopping the deadly Amelia.
Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone (M3GAN, Housebound) from a screenplay he also penned and a story by Johnstone & Akela Cooper, Johnstone does a solid job back at the helm for ‘M3GAN 2.0’ guiding along the very different sequel with style, humor and heart. The sequel’s cast includes many returning individuals paired with a handful of newcomers and includes Allison Williams (Get Out), Violet McGraw (The Life of Chuck), Brian Jordan Alvarez (80 for Brady), Jen Van Epps (Pike River), Aristotle Athari (TV’s Hacks), Ivanna Sakhno (TV’s Ahsoka), and Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water) along with more and most offer capable and fitting performances in their respective roles.
‘M3GAN 2.0’ delivers a very different sequel than its predecessor; straying from the horror tone of the first installment and delving full on into action comedy territory this time around as the deadly M3GAN also transitions from villain to hero in the sequel in order to combat an even deadlier new creation intent on eradicating humankind. If you’re at all like me, I can guess what your next thought is and the answer is yes, it basically goes full on ‘Terminator 2’ with the sequel and while it was met with a surprising amount of bad reviews and backlash mixed with some fan appreciation, it doesn’t do a terrible job of shifting into a slightly different genre or in changing up the role of the title character this time around.
It also serves up a number of explosive and visually marvelous action sequences that showcase the notably bigger budget that accompanies it this time around, while once again providing an Unrated cut that takes it into more R-Rated territory with the violence (more on that below). It may not be perfect, but it’s a generally solid sequel that dares to take a chance and switch things up which was a pleasant surprise and if you enjoyed the first one then you’ll probably have a blast with this follow-up.
Just as with the first film, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ arrives home featuring a new Unrated Edition which runs about 48 seconds longer and once again takes things to some bloodier and more graphic places at times, although without the additional language which implies they had a more concrete plan of how to release it this time. Without getting into any blatant spoilers, a few of the changes in the Unrated edition this time around include some extra bloodshed and splatter during fight sequences, along with a few other notably more graphic extensions such as a head knocked off in the opening scene shown in shadow that now sees the head land in a bucket, along with a more graphic look at a snapped and severed arm during the climax and a few other minor tidbits in addition. It certainly doesn’t change the general feel or style of the film by any means but does offer a bloodier and graphic take on many moments along the way.
Overall, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ is a fun, goofy and action-packed follow-up that takes things in a notably different direction, turning the first film’s villain into the sequel’s hero and largely departing from the horror movie tone in favor of a more sci-fi action movie vibe this time around, with a noticeably bigger budget that stands out as a result of the intricate action sequences and impressive visuals on display. While it does have plenty of drastic changes in tone and appearance this time around, as well as a notably higher budget and more focus on action than horror, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ is very much recommended for any fans of the first film who should still find plenty about this enjoyable sequel to appreciate, especially if you don’t go in expecting a film largely identical to its predecessor. It may not hit every mark but does a suitable job with the shifts in character roles and tone and is well worth taking the time to check out.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘M3GAN 2.0’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation of both the Unrated and Theatrical Editions with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and it provides a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that repeatedly shines and never suffers from any notable issues to be located along the way. Detail is fantastic on character specifics, settings and the dazzling action sequences, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers more lifelike and vibrant coloring on many elements such as pieces of armor, tech-heavy rooms and more; all balanced splendidly by deep, clean and rewarding black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks delightful at every turn and should easily excite both fans and newcomers.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on both editions of the film. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is pretty spectacular on its own and it offers a crisp, clean and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send action effects, debris and characters/vehicles along with music and more regularly zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible at all times. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that repeatedly contributes to the onscreen fun and excitement throughout and shouldn’t disappoint whatsoever.
